“Many people have experienced psychological trauma, as children, as adults, or in connection with healthcare experiences. This means that sometimes recounting experiences or contributing to research as a patient and public involvement partner or talking with healthcare professionals, can be distressing and can trigger memories from the original experience.” FINALLY a paper about how patient engagement can cause harm. We need a thoughtful + respectful approach to engagement (and dare I say, more peer support in the process). Kudos to co-authors Catherine White and Dr Julie Highfield. I've just opened up a new date next month for this training! This overview will provide clinicians and care providers with a foundation of social justice principles as they relate to the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of eating disorders - even for those whose specialties are perceived to be unrelated. Eating disorders are so common that every care professional comes across them, whether they know it or not - and this training provides the tools for intervention, with an emphasis on liberatory practices that challenge harms rooted in oppressive systems. Learn more and register at https://lnkd.in/e5H6sjFa [ID: Text graphic on a pale mauve background. A large maroon circle outlined in yellow dominates the upper left corner of the image. Inside it, the words "Eating Disorders Treatment: Applying a Social Justice Lens for Healing & Liberation" appear. Below the circle, the words "Friday 3/29, 9:00-10:00am PT" appear in the lower right. As the week draws to a close, I reflect on the profound encounters with my last two patients, both grappling with mental health challenges amidst difficult life circumstances. These interactions serve as a poignant reminder of the multifaceted role healthcare professionals (HCPs) play in patient care, extending far beyond the realms of medication and diagnostics. My first patient, caught in a cycle of couch surfing and occasional homelessness, reached out for help, feeling disconnected and ostracized from society. Our half-hour consultation was not just a clinical evaluation but a heartfelt dialogue about his struggles and aspirations. He expressed a desire to address his mental health and secure stable housing—a request that led me to provide a supporting statement on his behalf. It was a small but significant way to assist in his journey toward stability and well-being. The second patient sought a space to voice her distress over family issues and housing insecurity. Tearful during the consultation, she found solace in simply being heard. Recognizing her need for ongoing support, I referred her to our mental health nurse for further care. These encounters underscore a crucial aspect of healthcare: the power of listening and offering a comforting presence. Sometimes, the most therapeutic intervention is providing an empathetic ear and understanding heart. As HCPs, our capacity to impact lives stretches beyond traditional treatment pathways—it's about connecting, empathizing, and supporting individuals through their most vulnerable moments. Finally the feedback from both patients has profoundly affirmed the value of my work. They both expressed a desire for me to be involved in their future clinical appointments, a testament to the trust and comfort we built in just one meeting. This recognition not only humbles me but also fuels my commitment to healthcare. It's a powerful reminder of the impact we can have, not just through our clinical expertise, but through our humanity and the relationships we build. Knowing that I've made a significant difference in their journey towards healing and stability is incredibly rewarding, reinforcing my belief in the importance of compassionate care #MentalHealthAwareness #PatientCare #Pharmacist

With lots going on this month, I wanted to highlight some important news articles and podcasts related to mental health through the Young Minds Initiative. There are quite a few different issues and perspectives in the articles & podcast episode for this month, but the one that really stood out to me is Simar Bajaj’s article “What America can learn from Rwanda to solve its mental health crisis”. Bajaj touches on the Rwandan genocide in 1994 and details how the country made advancements in its mental health system, now praised internationally. Officials developed a program where psychiatrists train other frontline healthcare professionals to provide basic mental health services, including therapy, prescribing medications, and conducting follow-up care. Another intriguing aspect is how non-governmental organizations are committed to providing mental health care in non-clinical settings through community healing groups, reconciliation villages, and more, while simultaneously addressing mental health stigmas, lack of access to care, and systemic distrust. Now, shifting focus to the United States, we have roughly 25,000 psychiatrists but need over 90,000 to adequately address the needs of Americans nationwide. Various barriers keep people from accessing mental health care. — Mental Health America reported that 1 in 4 adults experiencing frequent mental health distress cannot seek help due to the cost, and approximately 60 million Americans experience mental health illness. Bajaj goes into detail about the different initiatives and programs Rwanda has implemented over the years and how integrating decentralized services and community-based solutions could significantly benefit Americans, alleviating mental health burdens and improving community relations. Providing health care is a demanding and, at times, dangerous occupation. Professionals are exposed to infectious diseases and even violence from patients and their families. The COVID-19 pandemic only served to make things worse: In a 2022 CDC report, 46% of health care workers reported often feeling burned out. To provide essential services sustainably, health care professionals need a self-care routine that works and a community that can support them. That's where we come in. In our Professional Training Program in Mind-Body Medicine, you’ll learn a dozen evidence-based mind-body medicine skills over the course of five virtual training days, skills you'll also be able to practice with your patients and colleagues. Plus, our model has been hailed by the New York Times as having "the strongest evidence that it works to cure PTSD." Don't miss out on this chance to participate in this transformational training. The prolonged and arduous journey that chronic Lyme patients face can take a heavy emotional toll on healthcare practitioners too. Witnessing immense suffering day after day while pushing to find answers is mentally and emotionally draining. It's easy for burnout to set in if you don't have the right support.
