🌈 Each year, #LGBTQ+ #PrideMonth takes place in June to recognize the achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals and affirm their right to equal protections and justice under law. As recognition of LGBTQ+ rights continues to increase globally, events like parades are ever-growing safe spaces for members of the community to feel welcomed and celebrated. 💡 While we celebrate how far equal rights have come, it is important to remember that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. LGBTQ+ children and young people continue to face homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying and hate crimes. Disturbingly, they are at a higher risk of #sexualviolence and #exploitation, being 3.8 times more likely to experience childhood sexual abuse compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Due to prevailing homophobic attitudes, LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to engage in exploitive situations for sexual contact since they view it as the only option to meet their basic needs, while fearing that their victimisation will be dismissed. 🌈💚 At #ProtectChildren, we stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we fight to end child sexual abuse (#CSA) for all children. On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. This important awareness day sheds light on the challenges and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide. Despite progress, many still encounter legal barriers, lack of access to essential healthcare, and systemic discrimination. It's crucial that we work to ensure equal rights and protections for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Let's continue to advocate for a world where everyone can live authentically and free from discrimination. 🌈🌍Today is #IDAHOBIT2024, which raises awareness about the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people worldwide. 🌍🏳️🌈 This year's theme, "No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all" was decided through extensive consultations with LGBTQIA+ organisations from around the world. This theme will allow for advocacy and celebrations in many forms - be it from human rights defenders, LGBTQIA+ civil society groups, millions of people in our communities, and our allies. The LGBTQ+ community refers to those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, or other non-heterosexual or cisgender identities. This community has a rich history of fighting for equality and acceptance, including the famous Stonewall Riots in 1969, which marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Today, there are still many challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including discrimination, social stigma, and lack of legal protections. As caregivers, it's important to provide compassionate, non-discriminatory care to all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It's also important to create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. By educating ourselves and staying up-to-date on the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, we can better equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills to provide culturally sensitive care. As Pride season unfolds, discussions around corporate engagement with LGBTQ+ rights inevitably resurface. My latest piece for Council on Foreign Relations's Think Global Health examines the complex relationship between the #alcohol industry and Pride parades worldwide. With alcohol companies increasingly sponsoring #Pride marches and parades, I explore the potential implications of this form of marketing for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in light of well-documented health disparities in alcohol consumption. I propose some short- and long-term solutions to address this form of alcohol marketing and its potential harmful impacts, while safeguarding the integrity of Pride events.
