🚀 Milestone in Data Transmission at CERN 🚀 In February, deep inside CERN, two network engineers, Joachim Opdenakker and Edwin Verheul from SURF, set up a groundbreaking data link between the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland and the Netherlands. The result? A successful connection at an astonishing 800 Gbps, over 11,000 times faster than average UK home broadband! Their work ensures swift access to the immense data from LHC experiments, crucial for upcoming upgrades that will increase data production fivefold by 2029. In March, using specialized equipment from Nokia, they confirmed these speeds were achievable. This breakthrough hints at a future where fibre optic systems could push data at unimaginable speeds, like the recent record of 22.9 Pbps in Japan. 🌐💡 #TechInnovation #DataScience #CERN #Networking #FutureTech

[#highlight #quantum #photonics] One of our teams has studied a spin-photon interface consisting of an artificial atom – an InGaAs semiconductor quantum dot – embedded in a photonic structure – an electrically-contacted micropillar cavity. The goal of such an interface is to establish a perfect mapping between the spin state of an electron, confined in the quantum dot, and the polarisation state of a photon reflected by the device. This work is one of the first steps towards the development of more efficient spin-photon and photon-photon logic gates, which could serve as building blocks for a future quantum network performing quantum computation with photons. ➤ https://bit.ly/3S4P6K9 Elham MEHDI | Manuel Gundín Martínez | Claire Millet | Niccolo Somaschi | Aristide Lemaître, Isabelle SAGNES | Luc Le Gratiet | Dario Fioretto | Nadia Belabas | Olivier Krebs | Pascale Senellart | Loïc Lanco CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique | Université Paris-Saclay | Université Paris Cité

DLR Showcase Hamburg: It was exciting to see all the activity sparked within the DLR multiverse, the ion trapping platforms and all groups that are visibly eager to finally run their use cases on them! Thank you for the inspiring event highlighting groundbreaking progress in #quantumtechnology, well organized by the DLR Quantencomputing-Initiative. It was a pleasure for my colleague Jan and me to meet Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher there again, among many other interesting people und good friends. At eleQtron GmbH we live (from) cooperation. On behalf of Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., together with ParityQC and NXP Semiconductors, we've pushed the boundaries of ion trap technology with QSea I, Germany's first fully developed quantum demonstrator. This system prepares us for QSea II, which aims to refine the interconnected surface trap modules essential for scalable quantum computing. Events like Showcase Hamburg are vital to the exchange of ideas that drive our field forward, sparking collaborative innovation that will take quantum computing from promising theory to transformative reality. Here's to future quantum breakthroughs and partnerships! #eleQtron #ZukunftofQuantum #quantumcomputing

What a great start to 2025! It's been really good to see many of the key players from across the UK at the Free Space Optical Communications event we hosted in Durham and Newcastle the last two days. Also very appreciative that Kasia Balakier from ESA and Francesca del Monaco from Viasat had travelled from further afield to join us to share their project updates and development roadmaps going forward. Tours hosted by Northumbria University and Durham University to showcase their facilities and projects have already generated many interesting discussions for collaborations. As a consortium partner of the UK-ACE Connected Capabilities Network programme funded by the Satellite Applications Catapult and led by STFC Harwell cluster, we have been able to make this happen. With the world's demand for faster and larger volumes of data in an increasingly congested telecommunications infrastructure gathering pace at speed, this is a solution academics and businesses are working on right now to address this challenge. It is a great intersection to bring together optical, photonics and quantum technologies alongside other key adjacent sectors such as semiconductors and AI/machine learning. Not only the non-terrestrial networks are converging with terrestrial ones, free space optical communications is also converging with RF systems. Interesting developments. Back in 2015, Business Durham through the NE Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence partnered with six other European regions in the EU-Interreg project STEPHANIE to bring together stakeholders to grow the space photonics economy. It was very satisfying to see ten years down the line how the community and market have developed, and gaining momentum. Deeptech is hard! Finally, it is thanks to colleagues and all our partners, speakers and panellists who made the event such a fantastic and successful experience for our delegates. You know who you are! Physicists at Heriot-Watt University have proposed a novel approach to mitigate daylight noise in satellite quantum key distribution (SatQKD), potentially enabling 24-hour global quantum communications. Current SatQKD systems are limited to nighttime due to interference from sunlight. The team suggests using time and phase encoding to filter polarization, reducing detected daylight noise and allowing operations at dawn and dusk. This advancement could extend SatQKD operations by three to four hours daily. Their findings, published in Optica Quantum, will be tested in upcoming missions, SPOQC and QEYSSAT, set for launch in 2025.
