Supporting Military Spouses: Enhancing Opportunities and Stability Military spouses often face unique challenges, particularly during relocations. To address these issues, the U.S. Army has expanded its initiatives to support military families. These enhancements include reimbursement programs that now cover up to $1,000 for business costs and relicensing fees incurred due to military moves. Key Initiatives: 1. Reimbursement Programs: These programs aim to ease the financial burden on military spouses by covering costs related to business expenses and professional relicensing. 2. Military Spouse Career Accelerator Pilot: This program offers paid fellowships, connecting spouses with over 250 employers. Many participants secure permanent positions, with an average salary of $60,000 annually. 3. Educational Opportunities: The Army is expanding educational programs to help military spouses further their careers and gain new skills. 4. Remote Work Options: Advocating for remote work helps promote a better work-life balance for military families, providing flexibility and stability. Before I left active duty, I had a leader tell me that my generation of officers were part of the "special snowflake" generation of the military- we want to be treated as individuals and not just a plug and play asset of the Army. He phrased this as a negative. I see this as 100% correct, but as a positive! We each have a specific set of skills and abilities. The Army doesn't recognize this for the most part outside of the MOS qualifications they give you. For officers, the Army doesn't even care what degree you have for basic branches. Political Science degree? This indicates someone who would be an excellent logistics officer because they were good at a month long camp. In light of the growing retention issues, recruiting and talent management policies and culture need to change. We are not currently in a WWII/ Korea situation where we are losing Battalions of troops per day. Units have standard needs based on the MOS qualifications mentioned above. However, some individuals are better qualified to hold those positions than others. This could be based on degrees, certifications, language skills, previous evaluations, etc. These individual capabilities increase and become more specialized as they progress in their career. The military should capitalize on this instead of pushing it to the side. I particularly appreciate the highlight of the long term effect of this- it decreases the likelihood of multigenerational military service. This is one of our primary sources of recruits. If I saw my parents struggling to pay the bills, continually changing jobs/careers, and stressing about whether they will get to live together, then I would probably question if the military life was for me. This doesn't even include the stressors of potential deployments and training events.

As we approach the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes posting season, military families will face many challenges. One of which is the continued desire to learn and explore opportunities for personal growth. We know that maintaining continuity of education is a challenge for serving members and families. This is why Release Point Education spearheaded two first-of-its-kind Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between learning institutions that support military-connected populations. Nationally, Portage College, Loyalist College, and Nova Scotia Community College - NSCC formally agreed to support military-connected students. Within Ontario, Fanshawe College, Georgian College, Loyalist College, Humber College and Lambton College signed an MoU to reduce barriers for military-connected learners (each institution has different programming). Both of these MoUs have the potential to significantly and positively shape the lives of our serving members, #Veterans, and Families. The decision to leave military service and pursue postsecondary education may not align with the ETB's application and approval timelines. That is why we have introduced a tuition deferral process for qualifying Veterans. Happy Halloween! #transitioningservicemembers, what do you want to do after the military? This question feels incredibly simple, but can generate a dozen different outcomes. For some, the very thought of leaving the service is scary. As #veterans, our routine in the military was pretty easy to follow, and career paths were (for the most part) linear. After the #military, however, your trajectory is what you make of it! Ask yourself, “What would I really like to do for a living” if: ✅ Job qualifications didn’t matter ✅ It didn’t matter that the job was available ✅ Quality of life concerns were not a factor ✅ Earning money wasn’t a concern These self-assessment questions could help create your focus as you begin preparations for military separation/retirement.
