High-speed rail projects are among the most complex and costliest #infrastructure in the world to build, according to a 2024 report from AECOM, an infrastructure consulting firm. Costs for these projects are only getting higher, but political support seems to be growing in both major parties in the U.S. Read on in the third and final part of our series on the future of U.S. high-speed #rail:

The CFI program is divided into two distinct grant funding categories and requires that 50% of the funding over five years is made available for both Communities and Corridors: - Community Charging and Fueling Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities. - Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure along designated AFCs. Eligible applicants include states, metropolitan planning organizations, local governments, port authorities, Indian Tribes, U.S. territories, and more. Projects for both categories are outlined in a Notice of Funding Opportunity published today. Applications are due in grants.gov by August 28, 2024. Previously unselected applicants will have the option to request via email by July 1, 2024 that FHWA reconsider previously submitted applications. The Joint Office and FHWA will host two public webinars in the coming weeks to provide more detail on this funding announcement: - Webinar 1: Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Grant NOFO Overview Thursday, June 6, 2024, 2:00 - 3:30pm ET - Webinar 2: CFI NOFO Overview: Reconsideration of Round 1 Applications Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 1:00- 1:30pm ET Visit DriveElectric.gov to read more. The previous round of CFI funding, released in January 2024, benefited 47 projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico, supporting construction of approximately 7,500 EV charging ports. Still, FHWA received applications for six times the amount of funding available. Today’s announcement reserves more than $520 million for some unselected first-round applicants who may be reconsidered for the current round of funding. FHWA will contact unselected round 1 applicants directly about this opportunity.

The National Infrastructure Commission has today published its annual review with a warning that progress on policy, funding and delivery is mixed for transport (chapter 5). I haven't had a chance to review the findings yet in detail but a couple of key highlights that stand out - a coherent long-term plan for rail is needed, poor rail connectivity in the north and Midlands needs to be addressed, there is an urgent need to ensure infrastructure is resilient to climate change and that the government publishes it's third Road Investment Strategy as soon as possible. Transport for the North, Midlands Connect, National Highways, Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT), #netzero, #resilience, #levellingup, #publictransport, #infrastructure, #transport, #policyreview, #Capita

The Federal Government is seeking feedback to help guide us to support the decarbonisation of transport and transport infrastructure. Submission close 26 July The roadmap and action plan are being developed in 2 stages. The first stage is this Consultation Roadmap, which sets out the potential pathways for transport and transport infrastructure to contribute to net zero by 2050. It doesn’t set out the actions or policies that will be taken by government to support these potential pathways. The actions or policies to be taken by government will form the basis of the final action plan, which is the second stage of developing the final roadmap and action plan. Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and Roads Australia Board Director, Jim Betts, has delivered the National Transport Address at RA’s Transforming Transport Summit with a strong focus on the importance of collaboration between the Commonwealth and States. Jim provided an update on the raft of policies and mechanisms the Commonwealth has implemented to introduce more evidence, data and rigour to transport and infrastructure funding and resource allocation. With moves being made to a more sustainable infrastructure pipeline, Jim talked about the importance of a steady and managed pipeline in driving productivity. As transport becomes the leading emitter of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, Jim discussed the need to continue action on decarbonisation with electrification the clear path forward for vehicles, supported by the Fuel Efficiency Standard. The National Transport Address finished with a call to action for the industry and the need to deliver a more diverse workforce and sustainable industry for the good of future generations.
