An Important Next Step for Nature and Sustainability in Europe! 🌿   I would like to come back to a topic that I raised a year ago and that has bothered me since then, when the EU Nature Restoration Law was rejected by the EU Parliament. Two weeks ago, this important law has now been approved and published.🌿   For background: a staggering 81% of European habitats are in poor condition and the Nature Restoration Law aims to restore 20% of damaged areas by 2030, and by 2050, all damaged habitats will be rehabilitated.   For me personally this topic is so critical and a key milestone in the European Green Deal agenda. And for us at Unilever, it is a key enabler to now get a robust framework across EU countries to further drive our Sustainability agenda and specifically our activities to shift global agricultural practices. As part of our Climate and Nature Fund, which amounts to 1 billion Euros, we champion regenerative agriculture.   Still, hard for me to understand why this was rejected in the first place and why the legislation is more or less unnoticed by public media. Recently a friend asked me to contribute an article on some aspect of Environmental Stewardship/Caring for Creation in the lead up to this #EarthDay.  I struggled.  I’ve written a good bit on the subject including “5 Practical Measures”; “Life and the Dung Beetle”; “We’ve Got MORE Problems”; and “Overshoot.”   My contributions are miniscule and inconsequential compared to what’s out there.  Yet in spite of all the truth-telling,  I feel like everyone’s waiting for a magic bullet to see us through the looming transition. some kind of technical innovation that will make our problems go away. Truth is, we don’t like what will actually be required of us so we continue our focus on relatively minor issues and cover over with a green wash more substantive challenges. Sure, technology will help us, but likely not with the needed paradigm shift.  We know the nature of our problem and it ain’t pretty.  There are too many of us (population), using too much stuff (extraction/consumption) and we’re doing it in ways that are killing the planet (pollution/green house gases).  GDP growth, long the measure of an individual country’s success, actually has an inverse (negative) effect on our common home. The changes we need to make are paradigmatic and no president will get elected on that ticket! We can’t do nothing, so this Earth Day, instead of another article, I encourage us to stop wasting time waiting for miracle solutions.  Starting with ourselves and what we already know, we need to do the hard work! While we’re at it, let's reach out and build bridges with others who are also trying hard, extending a hand towards those who are impacted the most.  And seek inspiration in the awe and wonder that only nature can provide, an essential step for overcoming fear. God help us as we help ourselves!

On the World Environment Day, we hosted an impactful webinar in collaboration with #GreenSoleFoundation on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. The event highlighted critical environmental challenges and explored innovative solutions to combat these issues. Bitwisers overwhelmingly responded with their spontaneous pledges to drive awareness and action towards a more sustainable and resilient future. Bitwisers made meaningful pledges to reduce their consumption of natural resources and to develop a deeper understanding of how their purchasing habits, lifestyle choices, and sociopolitical decisions impact the environment. They committed to selecting products that are sustainably made, have minimal packaging, and are designed to last. Together, they committed to grow and spread awareness about environmental issues and sustainability practices.
