The African Development Bank has released an ambitious plan to modernise #African agriculture. The initiative, called #DakarII, counts with a staggering $61 billion budget. The approach, however, is to agro-industrialise #Afrca's #FoodSystems, relying heavily on corporate hybrid #seeds, hi-tech solutions, imported inputs, #GMOs, and large-scale monocropping of #maize, #rice, and #soybeans. The plan overlooks the diversity of needs, cultures, and ecosystems across African nations and communities. It sidelines small-scale farmers and #peasants, who already feed most of the continent, and also poses a threat to environmental biodiversity, indigenous agricultural practices and cultural heritage. Beyond that, the trend towards consolidating #land for industrial agriculture could potentially displace millions of smallholder farmers. It's no different for agroecological food production – farming, fishing, livestock rearing, and forest product collection. Without working capital, it is difficult to run a business at any scale. And we want agroecology to succeed at a large scale! According to FAO data, in 2022, credit to agriculture reached USD 1,099 billion globally. Sadly, most credit feeds the dysfunctional way food is produced, processed, and marketed – causing large greenhouse gas emissions, destruction of biodiversity, and inequalities. To transform food systems towards agroecology, we must orient funding flows to reward sustainability and equity, especially for social sectors that have historically been denied access to affordable credit. Let's meet changemakers tackling the dysfunctions of food systems and innovating to make credit available to food producers and agroecology businesses. These innovations address what and who credit is for and how to design it to be accessible, including a gender-based approach to address women’s access to credit. 💧New Declaration: Vietnam Is Not a Water-Rich Country 🧏 🏝 For generations, Vietnamese people have been taught that Vietnam is blessed with abundant natural resources, including ample water. However, at a meeting on June 4th, Minister of Agriculture Le Minh Hoan for the first time emphasized that Vietnam is not a water-rich country and must change its Agriculture practices to cope with climate change. 🔂 Turning to the aquaculture sector, Vietnam's shrimp and pangasius industries achieved success with robust water replacement methods (30-50% of pond water daily). However, this approach has caused significant environmental damage. This effort seeks to build bridges and empower our AC leaders across the sustainable rice ecosystem, encouraging the exchange of ideas and best practices. A key goal is for these leaders to take home insights on "Regenerative Agriculture Practices Towards Low Carbon Farming" and spread this valuable knowledge within their communities, promoting sustainable agricultural methods. 🍀 In a significant partnership with the Cambodian Agriculture Cooperative Corporation Plc. (CACC) and the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), Grow Asia – CPSA, this year's summit is dedicated to spotlighting the critical importance of regenerative agriculture in Cambodia's journey towards sustainable and resilient growth. It's an opportunity to unite different players in the field, enhance the adoption of regenerative practices, and foster innovation and knowledge sharing, all aligned with the global mission to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. ✨ Please note that the CPSA's initiative “Strengthening Rice Value Chain”, supported by HEINEKEN (Cambodia), is currently underway, with an 18-month timeline dedicated to boosting rice production and expanding market possibilities. Cultivating cooperative solutions: Sustain Africa & Rabobank in Kenya unite for soil health in Africa - With a backdrop of rising food insecurity in Africa over the past two years, various factors like high commodity prices, climate change, and currency depreciation have posed challenges to the Food & Agriculture sector. Rapid population growth, sovereign debt crises, and stagnating yields further compound the issue. The need to enhance soil health emerges as a critical component in mitigating these challenges.   Sustain Africa initiative: A swift response to fertilizer crisis In 2022, Rabobank co-founded the Sustain Africa initiative in response to rising fertilizer prices. The coalition, comprising farm input suppliers, farmer organizations, development partners, and research institutions, successfully made 200,000 mTons of affordable fertilizers available to two million smallholder farmers across 10 Sub-Saharan African countries. Building on this success, Sustain Africa is now focusing on addressing structural challenges in increasing African yields.   African soil health challenges and the role of regenerative farming The roundtable addressed the significant soil degradation affecting smallholder farmers in Africa. Factors such as incorrect fertilizer usage, weather changes, mono-culture, lack of irrigation, and inadequate farming skills contribute to soil deterioration. Regenerative agriculture emerged as a key theme, with discussions highlighting the need for more soil data and solutions to the lack of offtake certainty, crucial for transitioning to regenerative agriculture.   Networking dinner: Connecting over sustainable practices The event concluded with a networking dinner featuring products sourced from a Kenyan farm dedicated to cultivating healthy soils. A participating farmer shared insights into his approach and the challenges encountered, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in promoting soil health.   In embracing a cooperative mindset, Rabobank Kenya and Sustain Africa remain committed to fostering sustainable practices and addressing the pressing issue of soil health for the benefit of Africa's growing population.   #SoilHealth #RabobankEuropeAfrica #CooperativeBanking #SustainableAgriculture

I recently facilitated a training session for smallholder farmers on food systems transformation. The discussion led to a constructive debate on Agroecology versus commercial agriculture. Proponents and opponents drew stark contrasts between these two approaches. The pro-agroecology team made a compelling case, asserting that it is superior in promoting environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and holistic ecosystem management. They argued that agroecology encourages polyculture and crop diversity, which naturally helps control pests and diseases. In contrast, they contended that commercial agriculture often prioritizes profit, employing intensive, high-input methods that can come at the expense of biodiversity and environmental sustainability. They added that the focus on single crops (monoculture) in commercial agriculture can make it more susceptible to pest and disease outbreaks, leading to interventions with harmful chemicals like herbicides and pesticides. The pro-commercial agriculture team presented a counter-narrative, suggesting that these two approaches are essentially two sides of the same coin. They argued that the primary difference lies in nomenclature, some practices, and perhaps scale. According to them, both approaches have potential for mutual learning and integration. For instance, commercial agriculture can adopt certain agroecological practices to enhance sustainability, while agroecology can benefit from technological innovations that improve productivity without compromising biodiversity and environmental health. Commercial agriculture aims to enhance agricultural processes and outputs using smart technologies and proven science to achieve high productivity and greater market value, which ultimately benefits the farmer. The discussions were enriched by real-life experiences shared by smallholder farmers. This helped create a better understanding of these concepts and empowered them to engage more effectively in ongoing discussions on climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture. We utilized various metrics to deepen our analysis, including principles, goals, practices, scale, efficiency, productivity, economic viability, innovation and technology, adaptability to climate change, diversification of crops, and environmental stewardship, as well as considerations like land size and land tenure systems. Additionally, we delved into current trends & the impact of climate change on food production & systems, highlighting the need for adaptation in both approaches. We concluded by referencing key regional policy frameworks such as CAADP, and existing national laws. It was evident that all these recognize the importance of both agroecology and commercial agriculture in achieving sustainable agricultural development in Africa.
