Hoping this launch of the new drug, tafenoquine co-administered with cholroquinone can help eliminate the endemic faced by the countries affected. Even though the target for this drug is specific for Plasmodium vivax, there are many more types Plasmodium that causes malaria like P. ovale, P. falciparum, P. knowlesi and P. malariae. These are the most common types of Plasmodium species known to cause malaria. Looking forward for future R&D of new drugs in targeting these parasites. Well done GSK! #eliminatemalaria

This makes treatment more challenging, requiring not only effective antimalarial drugs but also primaquine to address the hypnozoites. - P. vivax often presents with non-specific symptoms, which can lead to underdiagnosis, particularly in regions where malaria is not endemic. This can delay appropriate treatment and increase the risk of complications. Management Strategies: 1. Awareness and Training: Health professionals must be trained to recognize the subtleties of P. vivax infections and the need for comprehensive diagnostic tests. 2. Enhanced Surveillance: Regular monitoring and improved diagnostic facilities are essential to identify and manage cases promptly. 3. #grrf Special Day Update 25 April – World Malaria Day World Malaria Day, which takes place on 25 April each year, is an internationally recognized day, highlighting the global efforts to control malaria and celebrating the gains that have been made. Since 2000, the world has made historic progress against malaria, saving millions of lives. However, half the world still lives at risk from this preventable, treatable disease, which costs a child’s life every two minutes. El Salvador is the third country to have achieved malaria-free status in recent years in the WHO Region of the Americas, following Argentina in 2019 and Paraguay in 2018. Seven countries in the region were certified from 1962 to 1973. Globally, a total of 38 countries and territories have reached this milestone. India is NOT featured in this list. A total of 3, 38,494 cases and 77 deaths were reported in 2019 in India. This day aims to reduce malaria cases and deaths due to it. #grrf #malaria #disease #who #preventable #health #people

25 April is World Malaria Day; Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world World Malaria Day is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control. ▪︎ 249 million new cases of malaria in 2022 ▪︎ More than 3.4 million suspected cases of malaria were reported in Pakistan compared with the 2.6 million suspected cases reported in 2021. Everyone has the right to quality, timely, and affordable services to prevent, detect, and treat malaria, yet this is not a reality for all. Infants and young children continue to suffer the greatest mortality; in 2022, an estimated 4 out of 5 malaria-related deaths in the African Region were among children under 5 years of age. Inequities in access to education and financial resources further exacerbates risk. Pregnancy reduces a woman’s immunity to malaria, making her more susceptible to infection and increasing her risk of severe disease and death. India, recognizing the urgency, has set a bold target to eradicate malaria by 2030, as outlined in the National Framework for Malaria Elimination. 🔍 Despite strides made, obstacles persist, including drug resistance, inadequate sanitation, and the disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations, notably children and pregnant women. Primordial prevention is key, emphasizing grassroots awareness. 💡 Today, during a visit to a sub-centre, we initiated an impromptu malaria awareness session within a local village. With the participation of ASHA workers, ANMs, and MPWs, the community was educated on malaria basics: its signs, symptoms, and prevention methods. 🌱 This grassroots approach aligns with the WHO framework of community engagement, placing public health in the hands of the community. By fostering awareness and education at the grassroots level, reinforces the strength of India's healthcare system.
