With state-of-the-art data on venture funding provided by Net Zero Insights, H2UB has investigated patterns of venture funding of hydrogen start-ups in Europe and the US. With everyone in the hydrogen industry talking about the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act, H2UB has taken a close look at how much is being invested, when, where, by whom and in what funds. 🎯TOP 3 takeaways from H2UB’s study: 1. There is a steady increase in funding for climate technologies. Total investment is highest in the US, but Europe catches up significantly. Hydrogen funding has especially taken off, outpacing the general climate tech trend. 2. The total volume of equity invested is around twice as high in the US. The same is true for average deal sizes. While early-stage financing in Europe is on a par with the US, the volume of later-stage financing in the US is five to six times higher. 3. The majority of funding in Europe and the US goes to H2 production technology, but with different emphases. 𝐓𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐩: There is a huge scale-up gap between the US and Europe, although Europe is slowly catching up. We need to build tomorrow's champions now, or we will miss our window of opportunity. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions announced Phase 1 winners of its Energy Program for Innovation Clusters (EPIC) Round 3 award, a $4 million competitive funding program for incubators supporting energy innovation clusters. mHUB will receive $150,000 to develop the Climate & Energy Pilot Launchpad Program to provide targeted support to pilot-ready climate and energy hardtech startups and SMEs. The Pilot Launchpad program will bring together committed industry partners, expert-led technical assistance, and funding opportunities to accelerate lab-developed technologies from prototype to market. This will help bridge the critical gap in Chicago’s lab-to-market pipeline to ensure climate and energy startups have the tools they need to scale in the region.
