In 9 days I will head off into the Arctic's coldest winter on record with Sightsavers Ireland on their First Light For Sight challenge. Myself and 10 others have been training and fundraising for months, to prepare ourselves for the expedition, and to raise crucial funds to stop preventable blindness in some of the world's poorest countries - which are also those most left behind, and affected by our climate changing times. I'll be uncomfortable for 5 days, and admittedly I'm already uncomfortable grappling with the idea that I may be sleeping without heat in -40 degrees, dragging a pulk sled of survival gear across frozen lakes in the dark, but whatever 'challenge' I face on this expedition, would never begin to compare to the challenge faced by hundreds of millions of people globally who are every day unable to see, work, feed or dress themselves normally due to blindness that could have been prevented. It costs 38 euro to provide sightsaving surgery and change an entire life, and I'm privileged to work for an organisation that will double the donations that I raise (as well as grant me 1% of my working time to spend with charitable organisations). What is a community foundation anyway? We get this question a lot. So let's break this down! Community foundations: ✔ are tax-exempt public charities recognized by the IRS. ✔ support a specific geographic region. ✔ manage charitable funds established by individuals, families and organizations. ✔ work to solve complex issues within its defined geographic region. Central Florida Foundation is our region's community foundation. We serve 7 counties: Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Volusia, Brevard, and Polk. Here in Central Florida, we operate through the lens of Thrive, our localized version of the Sustainable Development Goals. Think of this as a blueprint for making our region an even better place to call home. What would you do for the people you love? On the 1st of January 2022 I sent my grandma (in the picture) a message: 'My biggest goal this year is to give you a hug!'. In 2021 we almost lost her and I could not bear the thought of not hugging her again. On the 7 November 2022 I surprised her. I will never forget her face. I spent 3 months in Rio Grande do Sul so I could spend as much time as possible with my family and friends after 4 years since the last time I was there for literally 2 days only. Unfortunately, everything will have changed next time I go back there. For context: the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern part of Brazil is facing the worst #climate catastrophe of its history. My grandma is 87 years old and has had to leave her home, where she lives for over 50 years. My sister and her mother had to leave their home. My close friends have left their homes. Thankfully they are "safe". But there are over 100,000 people literally with nowhere to go and who lost everything. Everything is missing in the state: food, water, medicine, clothes, pillows, mattresses etc. I am here humbling asking for your help again. I am trying to raise as much funds I can to support the recue efforts going on. I wish I could do more, but I physically, emotionally and financially I can't do it by myself. Thank you to American Century Investments for their generous support of IiO and for creating a culture in which employees can invest in each other and invest in others! Giving for the greater good is a core tenet of their culture, inspired by the generosity of their founders and motivated by the impact they have on global health through the Stowers Institute. They have designed their community and philanthropy programs to amplify the support that their employees give to their communities in ways that are personally meaningful to them. Dollars for Donors, their matching gifts program, is successful because it puts their employees at the center of their community engagement. Their employees participate in Dollars for Donors at a rate three times higher than the national average. American Century has supported more than 600 nonprofits through this program. American Century matches monetary donations dollar for dollar and each volunteer hour with $25. In all, American Century will match as much as $10,000 for each employee. They match each employee’s donations up to $7,000 annually to 501(c)(3) organizations and up to an additional$3,000 annually for contributions to disaster relief. In 2023, disaster relief matching gifts were directed to organizations like the American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and Heart to Heart International to support specific causes that are meaningful to employees. In 2023, American Century employee monetary donations and volunteer time submitted to Dollars for Donors produced $1,067,749 in matches and employees reported 5,784 volunteer hours. In addition, American Century Investments distributes over 40% of its dividends to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, a 500-person, nonprofit basic biomedical research organization. The Stowers Institute has received dividend payments of more than $2 billion since 2000. In the picture: American Century’s Enable and Pride business resource groups raised more than $32,000 to help fight AIDS as part of the 2023 AIDS Walk Kansas City. For the first time ever, the Stowers Institute also partnered with American Century for this event. History has many examples of bequests that have transformed the lives of individuals and communities, but very little is known about bequests. Further to my other post, having read the full paper, I can confidently say it's a must-read for our sector. Another great report by JBWere 's John Mcleod and Kim Venter. It provides invaluable insights that can transform our approach to bequest strategies. A clear call to action is for us to look at our bequest strategies in light of this report. Discuss the findings with your board and share this critical information with families and donors who will find it enlightening. The diagram in the report, which challenges conventional notions of wealth, is particularly striking and thought-provoking.
