DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 You might experience HIV stigma, whether you have HIV or not. HIV stigma is when people have negative attitudes and judgements about people with HIV, or people from groups associated with HIV. If there is a lack of information on HIV, people are more likely to have fear and stigmatising attitudes about HIV. HIV stigma and discrimination can happen in any area of life - even in healthcare clinics.Stigma and discrimination affect people with HIV in lots of ways, from isolation to struggling with medication adherence. This makes stigma a barrier to those living positively and those around them. To eradicate stigma we must stay vigilant to misinformation on HIV/AIDS and educate others on the reality of living positively. Our webinar will highlight real-life experiences through storytelling and provide positive HIV education in the hope of being one step closer to eradicating the stigma HIV-positive people face. What does it mean and how well is it understood by our societies today?  Undetectable equals Untransmittable (#u=u) means that under effective HIV therapy, the virus cannot be sexually transmitted. A recent multi-country HIV survey across #austria, #greece and #switzerland explored public awareness, understanding and acceptance of U=U. The results clearly showed a limited recognition of U=U in all three countries. This lack of knowledge is often accompanied by HIV-associated stigma, social distancing, and misperceptions about HIV transmission. Raising awareness on National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (#NGMHAAD) 🌟 How should a #gayman living with #HIV protect his partner from HIV? Take HIV medication every day. Treatment with HIV medication is recommended for everyone who has HIV. The medication cannot cure HIV infection but can reduce the amount of HIV in the body. 💊 The main goal of medication is to reduce a person’s viral load to an #undetectable level. An undetectable viral load means that the level of HIV in the blood is too low to be detected by a viral load test. People with HIV whose viral load stays undetectable have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to an HIV-negative partner through sex. Maintaining an undetectable viral load is also the best way to stay healthy. 🌱Unfortunately, there’s still so much misinformation about #HIV which stigmatizes anything associated with the topic, and leaves people feeling overwhelmed and scared. What do most people do when they feel fear? Avoid the thing triggering the fear! Here we find a recipe for disaster for millions of people’s sexual health; so let’s dispel some myths with facts: - HIV is NOT a death sentence - Acquiring HIV does NOT mean you’ll progress to AIDS - HIV is NOT a “gay man’s disease” - You CANNOT get HIV by being around someone living with HIV - Today’s HIV treatments DO work 🌱No matter your sexual orientation or preference, if you’re sexually active, you should be having regular STI screenings which include testing for HIV. 🌱And now that we’ve got all that “fake news” out of the way - you can proceed to testing with confidence! HIV Treatment as Prevention: Another major way that HIV transmission can be prevented is by the method known as HIV treatment as prevention or TasP. This means taking HIV medicine by a person who is HIV positive to prevent transmission of HIV to someone who is HIV negative through sex. This has been proven to be true based on several large research studies spanning over many years in which discordant couples (male-female, and male-male couples where one is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative) were studied, and no HIV transmissions were observed when the HIV positive partner is virally suppressed. Simply put, HIV cannot be transmitted from HIV positive person who has undetectable viral load to HIV negative person through sex.
