As the Head of National Operations at Aegis Support Services, my responsibilities encompass the operational oversight of our entire portfolio. This includes security and all other facilities services.
Kindness at work
This concept may seem straightforward, but unfortunately, it is often overlooked in many situations. Both in my professional and personal life, this holds great significance and has always been a priority for me. While I have not always been successful in implementing it, any failures were unintentional rather than deliberate and I have seen many cases where deliberate was the norm 😔😡
As someone from the slightly older generation, most of my management training courses emphasized technical skills rather than interpersonal skills. It is truly heartening to witness the current emphasis on treating colleagues with respect and fairness. This does not imply that we should ignore poor performance, but rather acknowledge that it may be influenced by how we treat individuals (though not always).
Extracting the best from people can be a challenging journey, but approaching it with kindness and respect can be the determining factor between failure and success. Wow, quite deep for 5am on a Monday morning but there you have it 😳😃

one of the ways mentioned on how to have more kindness at work is by practicing active listening!
active listening skills are an important step to encouraging people to engage with you, it requires both commitment and practice, there are different ways to practice it:
First and foremost, non-verbal communication is an important way to show to the next person you're actively listening, you're maintaining eye contact and keeping an open posture and body language.
Second, Verbal communication, this is shown in asking the correct and suitable questions and inquiring more to allow for the other person to continue their talking and show them that you're following along with them.
Third, reflecting back to them on the information you've just learned, or using a follow up question, rather than looking at them without any reaction.
Fourth, last but not least, focus on them and let them speak, commit to listening and stop yourself from changing the topic to what you want to talk about.
Which of these practices are the ones you need more work on? share your thoughts in the comments!

Are You “Nice” or “Kind”?
Don’t Confuse “Nice” for “Kind” as a leader.
💞 Kind* is the courage and ability to say and do what empowers others, even if it is not what they want to hear. It involves staying authentic, true, and empathetic in the “contact” with them through the process, even if they get uncomfortable and don’t like you for that truth.
—> It is about “Them” - the true leadership in empowering them even if at the expense of your own discomfort in staying truthful.
😧 ‘Nice* is saying what they want to hear so you are liked, even if your “niceness” promotes their helplessness, confusion, and ultimate “stuckness”.
—> It is about “You”- wanting and feeling comfortable in “being such a nice person” even if at the expense of their growth.

A lot of my work involves understanding behaviours and reinforcing how important positive ones are. These are crucial ingredients in developing healthy team cultures.
It all starts with kindness - an often overlooked human trait in our busy lives. They can be small or large acts; with often the smallest ones having the greatest impact.
Understanding colleagues diverse needs, being kind and respectful of the individual journeys to get to today are just as important as, being ready to lean in, and show kindness when help is needed. It’s also heartwarming and uplifting for the giver too!
This past week I did nothing unusual - did something to help a colleague; in my mind, an act of kindness and support. Totally unexpectedly, I received a lovely note at the end of what was for me, a hard week - saying, ‘thank you’. I had done what I could have to help. That small act of kindness made a positive impact. That’s why I love my job. In a tiny way, I helped. Imagine the impact on organisational cultures if, we all did one act of kindness each a day? Tell me next Friday about your acts of kindness !
Have a good week everyone ❤️
