Mental health hasn’t featured very much in this general election campaign, especially when you consider how important it is to voters and how important an issue it is. But it will be a major area of concern for the new #government, whoever that may be on July 5. And a big question will be how we can improve access to treatment for service users. In the first part of our three-part #webinar series on mental health waiting times, we looked at the importance of accuracy in enabling Trusts to understand the extent of their waiting lists more clearly. The paper identifies barriers, facilitators, and strategies for action at social/system; services/supports and personal/older adult-levels of influence. It is intended as a tool to inform planning and decision-making across policy, practice, education and training, research, and knowledge mobilization arenas.

Reflecting on the strides made in mental healthcare throughout 2023 fills us with hope and inspiration, especially as we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month. From policy changes in Congress supporting better reimbursements for licensed professionals to the increased recognition of the invaluable role played by peer-support specialists and community healthcare centers, our nation celebrated numerous accomplishments. Yet, amid these victories, a sobering reality remains—many Americans still grapple with limited access to crucial mental health care services. Despite our advancements in knowledge and advocacy for mental health treatment, the persistent shortage of qualified psychiatrists nationwide continues to hinder progress. As we move forward into 2024, let's build upon the momentum of 2023's achievements and redouble our efforts to address the root causes of mental health access challenges. In 2008, the U.S. named July as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, yet more than 20% of adults continue to live with mental illness— many of whom not getting the care they need. Lack of treatment for mental health challenges can stem from a variety of factors, including lack of access to adequate healthcare specifically for underrepresented communities. So, how can we bridge the racial health gap? Three experts in the healthcare industry Nora Triola, Ph.D., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., David Cade, and Julie KennedyOehlert weighed in on the discussion, sharing how organizations and individual service providers can improve health outcomes in underserved communities.
