As we kick off National Volunteer Appreciation Month tomorrow, I'm reminded of the profound impact that building genuine, meaningful relationships can have on volunteer retention within the nonprofit sector. My time with the Boy Scouts of America underscored the value of these connections, showing that beyond traditional management techniques, it's the personal, individualized approach that truly makes a difference. At the core of keeping volunteers engaged is recognizing their unique motivations and dedicating ourselves to developing real connections with them. This means being actively present at events, not just overseeing but participating and showing genuine appreciation for their efforts. Personal gestures like handwritten thank-you notes, acknowledging personal milestones, and remembering important dates demonstrate care and foster a deeper bond with the organization. Creating a sense of community among volunteers, where they can connect and support each other, also plays a crucial role in retention. This approach not only makes volunteers more likely to stay but also turns them into ambassadors for the cause, driven by their strong connection to the mission and to each other. The key to successful volunteer retention lies in these strong, genuine relationships. By focusing on individual connections, personal recognition, and fostering a sense of belonging, we can create a volunteer base that is not just committed for the short term but deeply dedicated to the cause for years to come. Campaigns are won and lost on leadership. No other single factor impacts a campaign’s outcome. Gone are the days that a cowboy gift officer or a dedicated philanthropy director could successfully campaign alone. Instead, campaigns are about aligning the organization's top strategic priorities with donors' top philanthropic priorities. Because campaigns involve and impact the community on such a deep and personal level, leadership from the community is critical, acting as an invaluable endorsement. Yet, we often allow our leaders to dictate their own level of engagement in the campaign process, resulting in unclear and inconsistent leadership as well as frustration and demotivation among other volunteers. Mine: Don’t underestimate the experiences you can get in school organizations, Clubs and associations. LT Tip #117 – Emotionally Intelligent Leaders make time to be part of their community Dale Marie Golden will be centerstage during the Oakland Ballet’s Nutcracker 👑 performance this weekend. Her energy supporting the arts and other value-adding projects within her Oakland community is contagious. Are you inspired by her work, but "do not have the time"? ⌚ Don’t wait until you have “time”-- because it will never be the right moment. There are many excellent causes that will appreciate the one or two hours you can give. Find one that speaks to you and support them with the time and money that you can afford now. What is meaningful to you 🤔 🔎 Your neighborhood community? (rake leaves) 🔎A local food bank? (help box groceries) 🔎A non-profit association? (buy a ticket to an event, walk a shelter dog) 🔎A political action group? (pass out flyers) Just like a butterfly wing 🦋 – a few tiny actions can have a long term impact. One of the leadership lessons I learned from my volunteer work was how to engage each person where they were. Thank you Sara Trub who taught me to 🙂🙂 speak with a volunteer, learn about them, their talent, their passion, and the amount of time ⌚ they had to give.
