We are excited to unveil a new suite of projects from our 2023 Request for Proposals, aimed at integrating Indigenous Knowledge into ocean and coastal decision-making. Historically, the traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples has been overlooked, impeding effective conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. These projects seek to bridge this gap, focusing on the identification, analysis, and communication of Indigenous Knowledge where culturally appropriate. By fostering innovative engagement approaches, we aim to enhance marine ecosystem management through a collaborative and respectful inclusion of Indigenous traditions and wisdom. https://lnkd.in/g3Amde72

Another interesting webinar hosted by the Ecosystems Knowledge Network (https://lnkd.in/e6DKf5Am) coming up: "Most of the landscapes and seascapes of the UK gain their value and identity because of the way they have been shaped by both people and nature. New efforts to achieve nature recovery don’t always give due recognition to the culture and heritage that is so important in making places where people want to be. Likewise, efforts to enable places to thrive culturally don’t always harness the value of nature." https://lnkd.in/eh9nCTWE

April is an exciting month for WildAid! We’re thrilled to be heading to Barcelona to participate in the UN Ocean Decade Conference where the global ocean community will convene to share concrete ocean-based initiatives and solutions currently being implemented worldwide. 🌊🌏 WildAid’s Marine Program Manager Aldo Simone will speak at two sessions, sharing WildAid’s solutions for improving enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) and how technology can protect MPAs. Just ahead of the #OceanDecade24 Conference, we’ll also attend the Scaling Global MPA Capacity to Reach 30x30: Cultivating a Systems Approach to Action event, co-led by Blue Nature Alliance, the EU Ocean Governance Project, and others. We're looking forward to sharing our expertise on enforcing MPAs while learning from global experts who share the common goal of restoring our planet’s oceans. 🌊 Stay tuned for more details on these exciting events!

On June 6, 2024, the governments of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama came together for the Immersed in Change UN Ocean Conference in San José, Costa Rica, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). CMAR has set a global example of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and regional leadership. Recent milestones highlighted at the conference included: 🔵 November 2021: Signing an agreement to create a 500,000 sq. km transboundary biosphere reserve connecting and protecting the Cocos, Coiba, Galápagos, Gorgona, and Malpelo Islands. 🔵 June 2022: The Connect to Protect coalition pledged over $150 million in technical and financial assistance for marine protection. 🔵 March 2023: Within nine months, the coalition secured $118.5 million to support the global 30 by 30 target, marine conservation, and climate resilience. CMAR, a vital region home to 160 marine species and supporting billions in local economies, serves as a model for international cooperation. As we celebrate this milestone, we look ahead to ambitious action beyond 2030. Patricia Leon of the Bezos Earth Fund reiterated their commitment to supporting CMAR’s technical secretariat for the next three years. “The Bezos Earth Fund committed to finance the first three years of the technical secretariat of CMAR and is happy to maintain that commitment in this important next step” -- Patricia Leon of Bezos Earth Fund Learn more from Enduring Earth: https://lnkd.in/ew5sWbTi #CMAR20 #MarineConservation #EasternTropicalPacific #SustainableFuture #OceanLeadership #ConnectToProtect

This issue has been a topic of conversation and series of studies. I am glad that it is finally gaining traction at leaders level in the United Nations. What our workshop showed was that there are steps that can and must be taken at local, regional, national and global levels to alleviate suffering and build resilience as we redouble our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon dioxide removal and strengthen both MRV and eMRV systems. Financing for all this is key and we earnestly hope that the climate COP29 billed as "finance COP" will live up to the expectations. In preparation for the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise on September 25 at #UNGA, we are excited to release the Coastal Resilience and Sea Level Rise Workshop Report, which was produced following a workshop that was hosted by the Marine Policy Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in June 2024. The goal of this workshop was to review the latest scientific findings on #SeaLevelRise and #CoastalResilience to discuss community approaches to increase resilience and adaptation. We assessed lessons learned through the #ResilientWoodsHoleInitiative and #ResilientMassPlan and how they translate to other communities. Download the report to read suggestions from high-level specialists in science, NGOs, and civil society on how to increase coastal resilience and adaption at the community, state, national, and international level. Excited to see the Coastal Resilience and Sea Level Rise Workshop Report released by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution! As founder of the Center for Sea Rise Solutions and candidate for CA Lieutenant Governor, I'm thrilled to see this critical issue gaining traction at the UN level. Key takeaways that align with our work at the Center for Sea Rise Solutions: ✅ Multi-level action is crucial: From community to international levels, we need coordinated efforts to build resilience and adapt to sea level rise. 🌊 Lessons from initiatives like #ResilientWoodsHole and #ResilientMassPlan offer valuable insights for other coastal communities. ⚡ Integrating scientific findings with community approaches is essential for effective adaptation strategies. 💰 Financing is key: The upcoming COP29 "finance COP" will be pivotal in addressing funding needs for resilience and adaptation efforts. As we approach the UN High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise (Sept 25, #UNGA), it's clear that our work at the Center for Sea Rise Solutions is more important than ever. We're committed to translating these high-level discussions into actionable solutions for California's coastal communities. I'll be attending NYC Climate Week to further these discussions and share our California-specific insights. This amazing report is a must read from Mushkegowuk.
I was tasked by the Mushkegowuk Council as the project lead of this draft feasibility assessment report called Tawich is Where I Belong for the proposed National Marine Conservation Area in western James Bay (Weeneebeg) and SW Hudson Bay (Washaybeyoh). Mushkegowuk Council released it just before the holidays. Cree version is coming. It's out for review by communities. Have a look here https://lnkd.in/gDXfCGhi Immense gratitude to the many people who worked with me to put this together including incredible Indigenous artists whose art lifted this report to a whole new level: Betty Albert, John Reuben, Patrick Cheechoo and Robin Kioke. Betty Albert's art is the cover. Stay tuned to hopefully good news on this incredible ocean and coastal area in 2024.
