September is Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month. This inherited genetic condition affects more than 100,000 people in the United States and 20 million people worldwide, with a significant impact on communities of color. Too often, those living with Sickle Cell Disease face barriers to quality care, early diagnosis, and effective treatments. Today is Rare Disease Day, a global movement aimed at raising awareness and understanding of rare diseases and their impact on individuals and families. With approximately 300 million people worldwide living with rare diseases, this day is a reminder of the unique challenges they face in diagnosis, treatment, and everyday life. MAC Clinical Research has worked on a number of clinical trials for rare diseases and conditions that affect fewer than 1 in 2,000 people such as Sickle Cell disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency. We should also take this opportunity to recognise the tireless efforts of carers, researchers, and healthcare professionals dedicated to supporting people living with rare diseases. With greater awareness and collaboration, we can work towards improving access to treatments, advancing research, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those affected by rare diseases. While these medications are generally well tolerated, it remains uncertain whether intravitreally administered anti-VEGF medications are toxic to the kidneys and if that risk is different by medication–ranibizumab, aflibercept, and bevacizumab. This uncertainty has led some authors and practitioners to recommend the use of ranibizumab, which has the least suppression of systemic plasma VEGF levels, over the other medications. The purpose of this OHDSI network study as part of the Save Our Sisyphus (SOS) Challenge was to fill this gap in knowledge by: A) characterizing the incidence of kidney failure associated with intravitreal anti-VEGF exposure, B) estimating the comparative risk of kidney failure associated with intravitreal anti-VEGF exposure between medications, and C) predicting an individual’s risk for kidney failure with intravitreal anti-VEGF use. #JoinTheJourney https://lnkd.in/eFG79at9
