Today, the Biden-Harris Administration awarded $100 million in critical funding to 18 winners across 15 states to remove barriers to housing production, build more homes, and lower the costs of renting and buying a home.
We need more housing. That means we need to reduce the time and cost to build new housing. MAHC celebrates these federal initiatives to streamline the red tape by reducing or eliminating review times for specific housing projects, incentivizing communities to zone for more housing, and much more. https://lnkd.in/eWYGys6r

Catalyst Conversations 1:
Is America waking up to the importance of safe secure affordable housing for its Citizens? I hope so, but in order to do this do they understand the technology that could actually make this possible.
There’s the old saying Trying to do the same thing and expecting a different outcome is a sign of stupidity, well I have to agree, but is that what’s going to happen? The advancements in construction technologies are incredible but does anyone really know how to integrate them effectively? Here on LinkedIn I have the window on the world of technology, and the pioneers that are actually trying to find out if innovations actually works, from 3d printing to advanced AI that is magical, but are these technologies really worth the effort? I believe some of them are! Industry is communicating better than ever before and with respect in their voice, we know how difficult it is to try and introduce new ways to the teams that actually do the build, their no nonsense attitude comes from years of hearing about some clever gadget that will change the lives for ever, I tried a few, and there probably sitting in the back of a lockup somewhere, as I’ve tried to block out how much it cost, and yes most of the innovations being tried are a new smoothie maker or a new air type cooker that I convinced myself I had to have. Is that the same in construction tech? Some of it is! But some of it isn’t!
Technology or products that address the fundamentals that construction especially housing face every day. I’m going to post a few examples of areas to focus and I’ve asked industry experts to comment, let’s see if this catalyst conversation makes industry think of what could be! Rather than what will never.
A newly formed Bipartisan Housing Caucus is stepping up to address the nation's housing crisis. With a focus on increasing affordable housing, this initiative aims to bring together lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to find sustainable solutions.
Prefab construction could play a crucial role in these efforts, offering a faster and more cost-effective way to build quality homes.

Twin Cities Housing Alliance agrees with Jay Parsons and National Multifamily Housing Council President Sharon Wilson Geno's insightful analysis of President Biden's national rent cap proposal. These issues resonate locally in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and highlights the challenges and negative externalities of rent control and other policies that impact housing supply.

Ottawa Home Builders applaud new Provincial Planning Statement as a critical step toward solving the housing affordability and supply crisis
August 20, 2024 — The Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) applauds today’s announcement by the Ontario government regarding the release of the updated Provincial Planning Statement (PPS), formerly the Provincial Policy Statement. This new PPS is a critical step forward in empowering municipalities with the tools and flexibility they need to expedite the construction of new homes, aligning with the Ontario government’s ongoing efforts to cut red tape and streamline approvals.
“Ottawa has a housing pledge of 151,000 new homes locally by 2032,” said Jason Burggraaf, GOHBA Executive Director. “This updated PPS better defines the path we need to take and will help all levels of government to align their efforts to address the current housing supply and affordability crisis.”
The PPS sets the policy foundation for regulating the development and use of land province-wide. Critical improvements in the updated PPS include:
-Standardizing municipal population and employment growth forecasts across the province by using Ministry of Finance projections.
-Simplifying how municipalities can manage their settlement areas.
-Delineating specific boundaries and minimum density targets for major transit station areas and higher-order transit corridors.
“We need to increase both the supply and diversity of housing in Ottawa and across the province,” Burggraaf said. “Increasing the speed and affordability to build all types of homes means more choice for all of Ottawa’s residents — not only for those looking for a home of their own now or who will be in the future, but also for those of us who have a home currently but will want the ability to move at some point.
“This new PPS is welcome news for all of us as it ensures there is clear direction on increasing housing supply, which is the critical step to improve housing affordability in communities big and small across the province.”

Urgent Need for Housing Policy Reform: Protecting Stability for All
Without balanced, sustainable policies, property owners risk financial collapse. And when that happens, the very affordable housing covenants designed to protect low-income families could disappear, leaving many without a place to call home.
To prevent this, we must find solutions that work for both tenants and housing providers. If property owners are pushed into bankruptcy, affordable housing is at risk of vanishing, exacerbating the crisis for those who can least afford it. Now is the time to reform policies that ensure both stability for landlords and protection for tenants.
What steps do you think we can take to reshape housing policies that protect both sides?

Today, new planning controls were made in the state-led rezoning TOD accelerated precincts of Bankstown, Bella Vista, Kellyville, Hornsby, Crows Nest, Homebush and Macquarie Park.
Earlier in the week, the NSW Government published the Affordable Housing contribution rates that will apply. In some cases, the contribution rates are lower than those exhibited earlier in the year. In other cases, they are higher.
• There will no doubt be lively debate about whether the contribution rates are too high, too low or about right. 📊
• Atlas Economics was privileged to have carried out a program-wide review of Affordable Housing contributions to support NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure as it seeks to balance enabling housing supply with contributions to Affordable Housing. 🏘️ 🏡
