This beautiful tree is the world’s most giant cork oak tree, planted in 1783. You can find it in Águas de Moura, in Palmela, a small village just East of Lisbon. The tree is called Sobreiro Monumental or Whistler’s Tree and is thus over 230 years old. It’s 53 feet tall and 14 feet in diameter, and its cork has been collected over twenty times. Until 1991, it produced 2646 pounds of raw cork, enough to stop 100,000 wine bottles. The Cork Oak is the National Tree of Portugal, where half of the world’s commercial cork is produced. As announced, the Women in Wine Expo will be held in Porto, the main wine city of Portugal. Due to time constraints, we won’t be able to travel to the South of Portugal to see the tree ourselves. Still, as professionals in wine, we want you to learn everything about cork that is considered as one of Earth’s most exciting and challenging materials. But it’s also one of the most natural materials. Cork breaks down completely without releasing nasty toxins back into the environment, and it can be repurposed and recycled. Regarded as a highly sustainable material, cork is also self-regenerative and does not contribute to deforestation. It is for a reason that the Portuguese sing this song: Whoever plants a eucalyptus tree grows it for himself. Whoever plants a pine tree grows it for his children. We're just back from Barcelona and the Seafood Expo Global (SEG24). As always, a whirlwind of seafood conversations, stakeholders, initiatives, conference sessions and most impressively exhibitors! We started the week with a team face-to-face core group meeting, where the big topics included our forthcoming public consultation, discussions on our ongoing beta trials as well as continuing ongoing conversations on governance, funding and staffing. Throughout the 3-day Seafood Expo (23-25 April) we had numerous meetings with new and existing partners, contacts and initiatives. The underlaying theme to all those conversations was small-scale fisheries and how to work collaboratively to enhance their visibility within spaces like these and generally in the global seafood market. We're most certainly tired but happy to say that after Barcelona we have many new and/or deepened collaborations, new opportunities and a to-do list to keep them all moving! Turkish Tourism must extend its beyond limits

Geographical indications (GI) identify products as originating from a specific geographical area and possessing a given quality, reputation or other characteristic attributable to that area. GIs can be registered at national, regional or international level (WIPO’s Lisbon System – https://lnkd.in/d87Z8R7z). In some jurisdictions, they can be protected through trademark rights (certification or collective marks), using for example WIPO’s Madrid System (https://lnkd.in/e6EAT5Qy). Did you know? The world’s first GIs were in the wine sector – Burgundy (France) wines in the 15th century; Port (Portugal) and Chianti (Italy) wines in the 18th; and Champagne (France) wines in the early 20th century. 🥂 Some quick facts about GIs (based on 2022 data): 🌐 There were more than 58,000 GIs in force worldwide. 🏆 World leader was China, with 9,571 GIs in force. 🍷 Wines and spirits accounted for more than 50% of the GIs in force globally. 👏 Hungary (7,843) had the most GIs in force among European Union member states.
