The American Chemistry Council has issued new principles for bio-based plastics. When it comes to definitions, maybe the confusion about the definition of #bioplastic is about to become clearer. In the principles fact sheet, the ACC says that "fossil-based compostable/biodegradable plastics are out of scope." Producers of PBS and PBAT have relied on fossil #feedstocks to produce these compostable/biodegradable #plastics. They crafted a definition of bioplastic that included biobased and/or biodegradable, allowing room for these plastics under the bioplastic umbrella. It is always tough to explain that a bioplastic can be derived from fossil feedstocks and now, as #labels and #sustainability #claims are being put under #regulatory scrutiny, this might just be an attempt to eliminate the confusion. https://lnkd.in/e3nmCRQJ
