Did you know that LGBTQ+ people face significant gaps in receiving adequate mental health and healthcare? Gaps in health insurance coverage, economic injustice, discrimination, bias, stigma, and violence all interact to worsen the health challenges facing LGBTQ+ people today. 🌟 On May 7, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, released the 2024 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Searching for a resource that caters specifically to LGBTQ+ youth of color? Take a look at this reflection tool created in collaboration with the Youth Engagement Network (YEN), a past project of ETR. This tool is intended to: ➡ Describe a healing centered and trauma-informed approach to youth engagement. ➡ Raise awareness about the ecosystem of institutional, interpersonal, and individual stressors and supports that affect the lives and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth of color. ➡ Spark reflection among youth-serving professionals to facilitate shifts in mindsets and actions to create a more trauma-informed and healing centered space for LGBTQ+ youth of color. If you're part of the LGBTQ+ community on the Internet, you might know a thing or two about fandom! 🌈 This study aimed to better understand LGBTQ+ adolescents and young adults' view of LGBTQ+ representation and community climate in online fandom communities. 🌈 Historically, representation of LGBTQ+ individuals is negative, perpetuating stereotypes, and lack nuance in ways that strengthen heterosexism. Tropes such as “bury your gays” exist in mainstream media, i.e. where LGBTQ+ characters are subjected to death or violence for the sake of a dramatic or shocking plot line. 🌈 Current literature suggests that LGBTQ+ youth online participation allows folks to experience identity-based exploration, development activities, and community building. Fandom acts as a form of counterpublics, a form of space for withdrawal and regrouping for marginalized communities, providing skill buildings for counter activities directed at wider publics, such as LGBTQ+ activism. Tomorrow is LGBTQ+ Elders Day, an important moment to celebrate the queer and trans elders whose visibility, advocacy, and everyday courage paved the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights nationwide. In recognition of the importance of our elders and how they serve as possibility models for our community, our May research focused on the impact of adult LGBTQ+ role models on LGBTQ+ young people. We found that 67% of LGBTQ+ young people report having at least one older LGBTQ+ adult role model in their lives. Why does this matter? Because having access to an older LGBTQ+ role model is associated with higher levels of self-reported life purpose amongst LGBTQ+ young people. Remember, life is cyclical. We advocate for queer and trans kids to become queer and trans adults — whose visibility will remind the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth that it’s okay to exist as you are.
