Invest in Africa's Youth, End Poverty: Key Takeaways from Global Citizen NOW The recent Global Citizen NOW conference highlighted the critical need to invest in Africa's young, growing population. Leaders from government, business, and philanthropy were urged to prioritize education and healthcare for young people in developing nations, particularly across Africa. This focus on youth empowerment is seen as a key weapon in the fight against global poverty. Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans emphasized the urgency of tackling these challenges, especially in light of current global instability. The conference set ambitious fundraising targets, including $6 billion for economic development in Africa and $600 million for a UN-led education initiative during emergencies. Beyond financial resources, Evans stressed the importance of empowering individuals to take action. He highlighted the need for clear, practical steps that everyday citizens can take to create positive change, even amidst a climate of rising polarization and discouragement. #GlobalCitizen #Africa #YouthEmpowerment #EndPoverty

Across Africa, millions lack foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) skills. This isn't just an education gap; it's a hindrance for economic growth on our continent and the achievement of the SDGs. Without strong FLN skills, individuals struggle to find decent jobs, healthcare, food security, develop innovations and also advocate for what matters. It's a vicious cycle. The Solution is Clear: Prioritize FLN in strategies to alleviate people and societies out of poverty! Let's break the cycle of poverty together. By prioritizing FLN, we pave the way for a brighter future for millions of Africans. #AUYoE #Foundationallearning

Africa has the largest youthful population, but the majority of this group find themselves in a quagmire. They battle with unemployment, underemployment and lack the incentives to unearth their potential. What creative ways can we harness their energies, creative ability, and zeal to propel the continent out of poverty? Some have the notion that Africa can be transformed by Africans and with African resources. They argue for 'home-grown' initiatives supported through direct funding from State, State entities and continental bodies. Currently, we have AfCFTA, but what is the commitment level? Are there harvestable outcomes to measure each of the General and Specific objectives for the initiative? The truth is that Africa cannot afford to miss out again in this globalized world where AI is becoming a determinant. Eric Worlanyo Deffor #AfCFTA

Incubators of Poverty! I spent roughly 10 hours reading the Book (via the audible version) "The Looting Machine: Warlords, Oligarchs, Corporations, Smugglers, and the Theft of Africa's Wealth" by Tom Burgis, and I worry about how African leaders are complicit in looting her resources to the West. Well, I don't subscribe to blame games for accusing the West of Africa's predicaments. But what are the motives for Public Policies in Africa? To drive development transformation or win the next election? From Nigeria, Ghana, DRC Congo, Angola, Niger and other resource-blessed countries in Africa have often stepped aside accountability in the management of resources. We have seen the emergence of new elites taking over control of resources while the vast majority of Africans suffer in poverty and squalor. The new slogan is to "Protect the bag (resources) and damn the poor! From a normative standpoint, Africa has no business with poverty! Lack of purpose-driven leadership, corruption, unenlightened followership (adult literacy), and low-skilled manpower are bigger issues that have continued to submerge the continent. African leaders are "hawking" and incubating poverty! Local communities and local voices are rising from Africa. Africans must fix Africa. As a good student of history, I know that Africa cannot continue on this self-destructive path. Education, social media, and Africa's youthful population are powerful tools that can change the narrative. In our time, Africa will succeed.
