Global Citizen is a movement using its collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030.

About us

We are an advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty by 2030. We do this by encouraging people to learn and take action on our platform; those actions apply pressure on world leaders to make commitments around the issues associated with extreme poverty: gender equality, food security, education, the environment, global health, citizenship, and sanitation. We don't ask people for money, but to take action for the world’s poor. These actions can be as simple as a tweet, signing a petition, making a phone call, or sending an email. By taking action, these Global Citizens are rewarded with access and tickets to our music festivals and other events around the world. So far, more than 13 million actions have been taken by Global Citizens, leading to $35 billion commitments being made by world leaders, which are set to affect 1.3 billion lives by 2030.

  • The latest #SOFI2024 report could not be more clear: ending the global food crisis requires urgent, unified action. That's why we're proud to partner with First Lady Janja Lula da Silva and the #G20 Presidency to tackle this issue head-on. A few weeks ago, we traveled to Rio for with Global Citizen European Board Chair and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Goodwill Ambassador, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, to highlight Brazil's leadership in establishing the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This groundbreaking coalition promises to unite global knowledge to strengthen social safety nets and shatter the generational cycles of hunger and poverty. Check out insights from our inspiring panel, including the First Lady of Brazil, Janja Lula da Silva, European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, World Food Programme Executive Director Cindy McCain, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) President Dr. Dr. Alvaro Lario, and Food and Nutrition Security National Council President Elisabetta Recine, as we work together to create a global plan to end hunger once and for all.

  • If we want to end the global food crisis, we need urgent action from our world leaders 🌎 That’s why we’re proud to be partnering with the Governo do Brasil – the host of this year’s #G20 – to face the problem head on! Earlier this week, we headed to Rio for #SOFI2024, where Brazil’s G20 presidency established the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a game-changing coalition uniting solutions and knowledge to drive action towards ending the hunger crisis. And Paul Newnham, CEO of SDG2 Advocacy Hub, joined us on the ground to share more about the importance of achieving SDG2’s ultimate goal of “zero hunger”. Hear what we has to say about this vital work, then join us in driving a global plan to end the global hunger crisis once and for all. https://lnkd.in/eQKecpHX

  • 🌍 As #G20 ministers gather in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the stakes for global leadership couldn’t be higher as inequality soars within and among nations. 🚨 Astonishingly, 1 in 4 developing economies is poorer today than in 2019. On the 80th anniversary of the Bretton Woods Institutions, we have a historic opportunity to fundamentally reshape the global financial system once again. We’ve written a letter signed on by 26 other orgs outlining 5 critical actions G20 countries can take to move forward action on sustainable development, inequality, and the climate crisis: 1️⃣ Support IDA21 Replenishment: The International Development Association (IDA) provides vital grants and low-interest loans to 75 of the world’s poorest countries. Increasing support to IDA by at least 25% can significantly contribute to ending extreme poverty worldwide. 2️⃣ Join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty: G20 members should unite with Brazil’s Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and commit to programs that fight hunger and bolster social safety nets both domestically and internationally. 3️⃣ Leverage Special Drawing Rights (SDRs): Channeling SDRs through the African Development Bank and Inter-American Development Bank hybrid capital mechanism could help quadruple their value, boosting financing for climate and food security. 4️⃣ Accelerate Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) Evolution: MDBs are crucial in lending resources to low-income countries. The G20 should ensure MDBs provide maximum value and work harmoniously to support countries’ priorities effectively. 5️⃣ Address Global Debt: Global debt deprives millions of essential health, education, climate, and humanitarian resources. The G20 must implement debt treatment and cancellation where possible and ensure new loans are transparent and open to public scrutiny. Introducing measures like debt pause clauses can quickly free up funds during emergencies. 6️⃣ Update Fairer Taxes: Top-polluting industries must pay their fair share in taxes. G20 members should endorse a global standard to tax billionaires and polluters adequately, and support efforts for Global Solidarity Levies to rebuild trust and support across the Global South. G20 Finance Ministers — seize this opportunity. Your leadership can reverse global inequality and usher in a new era of international cooperation. Let’s make this G20 meeting a turning point for a fairer, more sustainable future.
