This is an excellent article. Spot-on description of why sport and technology is important and how elite level performance can enhance the lives of all. When people ask me “why should I care about $500 marathon super shoes?” I always say “look around”. Everyone wears running shoes. Advances in foam, fit and performance at the top trickle down. Example? -Old people wear HOKA because the cushioning and stability engineered for ultra marathon trail athletes makes it comfortable for people with mobility issues. This is why I love high performance footwear design. Just read the latest SportsTechX report. It’s full of insights, and definitely worth a read. Shoutout to Rohn Malhotra & team on a great job! A few things that stood out: - 2023 was the lowest year for funding - 2023 was the highest year for Mergers & Acquisitions that we’ve ever seen - Huge interest in the space: Big tech, sovereign wealth funds, institutional funds (~34 funds with at least $4b+ of announced capital in 2023) The best companies are seeing results, and there’s a lot more backing on its way. But choosing what to work on is going to be even more important. It got me thinking: what could be huge in 5 years? 🤔 💡 Athlete Monetisation. This isn’t for the top athletes in the world, but for the millions that are trying to make it, and haven’t yet or might never make it. The economic structure of sports is built around reach and stardom. Individual sports are even more brutal. There is an opportunity to build solutions to help athletes on their way to stardom. Substack, Patreon and others have created a blueprint on how creators can monetise. Athletes are creators with a passionate fan base and unique stories. Jules Marie's journey from a Youtube star to the Australian Open Qualifiers is extraordinary. And he had a huge subscriber base following his every step. Why can’t all athletes have this? Revenue streams for athletes: - Salary/winnings - Sponsors/brand deals NIL changed the playing field for athletes. But there might be a bigger change coming… A direct to fan component. Fans want access, status and stories. Athletes want a shot at being the best at their sport, and funding shouldn’t be the reason they don’t get the chance. Companies like FANtium, Maze & Grandstand are already building solutions. Each has their approach but the approach that does the best job at aligning incentives between the athletes and the fans will come out on top. Curious to see how this evolves.
