🌟 Fair promotions 🌟 Did you know that when searching for a new role, only 33% of employees look at their current company first? (Gartner) Most of the time, it's easier to learn about opportunities at a competitor than at your own company. Whenever an internal opportunity arises, make sure you shout about it: 1) Set up alerts about internal roles, either in a dedicated Slack channel or monthly newsletter 2) Ask managers to talk about promotion opportunities in their 1-to-1s 3) Send a clear encouragement that internal applicants are welcome! #promotiontips #internalopportunities

I’m the sales leader you wish you had, treating you like a human, not a quota | Founder, Ripple Effect Sales💦 | Soon-to-be-Author of “The Layoff Cooties: It’s Them, Not You” | Lover of God, Charcuterie, & Legos💯🙌🏻❤️
Which job would make you happier? The one paying $39k or the one that earned you $325k in a given year? I’ve had both over the course of my 25 years in sales. And here is my conclusion: The highest earning potential jobs do not necessarily correlate with your happiness. My first job after graduating college paid an annual salary of $39k/yr. No bonus or commission potential. Just straight salary for a regular 40 hour Corporate America job working 8:30-5:30. At 22 years old, I thought I was rich. 🤑 Marriott International, one of the global brands for hotel excellence, hired me as an “information and process analyst” at their HQ in Bethesda, MD. After graduating from Roanoke College in May 2000, I didn’t apply for any full time jobs. I had been accepted into an international work experience internship that found me living in a London flat with several other recent college grads in the fall of that year. I spent the summer living in the basement apartment of my cousin and worked a temp job at Bank of America Mortgage filing and doing clerical work until I left for Europe. I graduated with a degree in business administration with double concentrations in International business and Marketing. This internship program was designed to give recent college grads an opportunity to live abroad and gain valuable professional work skills from their placement across global organizations. I applied and was accepted to intern at Marriott’s worldwide sales office in London. Just a few blocks down the street was the famous Harrod’s shopping Mecca. I’m not a big shopper but even I can admit it’s one of the world’s greatest retail experiences one can enjoy. I learned a lot in my three months living in London, traveling throughout the UK on hostel style weekends across England, Scotland, and Wales. My biggest regret was not getting to Ireland. Still have never been. I digress… My internship with Marriott across the pond led to opportunities to interview at their Corporate HQ upon my return stateside in December of 2000. The start of my professional sales career began in January of 2001. I reported to DeLisa Selwitz who turned out to be my first “professional crush” and someone who I wanted to be just like over the course of my career. More on DeLisa and her impact on me tomorrow. My first job was one of my happiest. I didn’t earn the most money, but it represented all the things anyone wants as they start out in anything new: a chance to prove myself. Marriott, through Delisa, gave me a chance when I had little to no professional work experience. There was something in me that caused her to offer the entry level role knowing she would need to invest time to get me ramped quickly and a productive part of her small team. Belief. It started in me that first job. And it began with someone else believing in me when I didn’t even know what to believe in myself. 🥹 That one word would play an integral role into who I would become nearly 25 years later…

As I surf the job boards every day, I notice one thing: “8+ years of experience required” in a specific field (mind you most of the jobs have salaries under $60,000) The first “real job” that I ever had was at the Fox School of Business at Temple University, I was the marketing and events coordinator for the centennial celebration. I had planned a few small campus events with my orgs and suddenly I was responsible for producing an event with 30+ vendors, a number of student performances, and over 50 volunteers (with oversight, of course). They knew I came in as an intern and ended up with a full-time job within 5 days, they knew I was a student who never planned such a large event, they knew I was taking 5 classes and working a second job at night…and not a single person in that office had any doubt that I could do it (and did). From my perspective, in entertainment/marketing/events…things change every day. New technology is created, new vendors are available, and everyone is looking to do something innovative. Of course extensive years of experience will always be valuable, but you might be missing out on the best candidate. The ones who are actually excited about the job, would go into an interview knowing they’re the target market and have ideas that nobody else is bringing, and bring a new thought process that can make what you do more efficient. So, do you really need someone with 8+ years of experience or do you need someone who’s creative, organized, and executes on time? #marketing #events #music #entertainment #hiringpractices #jobsearch

Here are a few things I've learnt while at Signify as a Sales Apprentice: Do's: · Do people favours 🤝 : Helping others out helps you build great relationships with colleagues, and the favour will always come back in the future to benefit you. · Be honest 💯 : When customers ask a question which you don't understand, be honest and say you do not know instead of potentially telling them the wrong information. Let them know that you dont know but will find out and come back to them ASAP. · Get involved in events 🎡 : Company events or Careers Fairs have helped me get to know people in the company which I wouldn't have come across. And it also gets your name out there, and shows you are willing to do external favours for the company. (Also great fun and good experience!) · Note down your calls 📒 : Keep notes of your calls so you know where you left off, and also have a conversation starter/way to keep your customer on the phone. Dont's: · Don't always wait on others ❌ : For example, if you are waiting for a sheet to be edited, be proactive and find out how to edit the sheet yourself. Eliminate unnecessary waiting time to be more efficient, and also make your colleagues lives easier. · Don't shy away from calls 📞 : The more calls you take, the better you'll become on the phone. Also, use this as a chance to take follow up calls for colleagues. The more uncomfortable you feel, the more comfortable you'll become. Also, don't drink loads at the works do so you have a booming head ache the whole next working day. I was told by a friend. Overall, these are the several things I've picked up as a Sales Apprentice after 5 months. I have got much, much more to learn and am looking forward to it. To the experienced sales people out there, please let me know what you think about my Do's and Dont's and drop any more tips in the comments. Would be highly appreciated! #sales #apprentice #salestips #b2bsales #signify

If you’re a college student with a year or two left of school, and you’re interested in med device sales post grad, try this now and over the summer: 1. Hit the jobs tab on LinkedIn, type in “sales internship” and filter by your city. I wouldn’t only look into med device internships. I’d almost prefer a B2B sales internship. You’ll make a lot more calls, speak to a lot more customers, learn how to sell better, and have the ability to put more numbers/results on your resume. Looks like ADP has a bunch in LA and I assume nationwide. 2. Join your local toastmasters club and go 2-4x per month. You’ll separate yourself and be miles ahead of future applicants if you do this. Just google Toastmasters in your zip code. 3. Add several hundred med device reps and leaders on LinkedIn from 10-15 companies you’re interested in. See what they’re posting about. Like and engage with their posts. Study the products and disease states they’re treating. Get familiar with who they’re selling to. Take a bunch of notes and watch procedural videos outside of work hours. 4. These things will get you started on your brag book to bring with you on interviews post grad. I didn’t do these things when in college, and it delayed my progress by several years. To my sales reps, managers, and recruiters on here: Any other tips these folks should do while in school to give them an edge post grad?
