The International Air Transport Association (IATA), together with the Air Transportation Systems Laboratory at University College London (UCL), the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), the The International Council on Clean Transportation and the Mission Possible Partnership, have released the Aviation Net Zero CO2 Transition Pathways Comparative Review. This groundbreaking publication marks the first comprehensive analysis comparing 14 prominent net zero CO2 transition roadmaps for aviation and aims to provide a “one-stop shop” for airlines, policymakers and all aviation stakeholders to better understand their visions for achieving net zero carbon emissions for aviation by 2050 and more. “The Aviation Net Zero CO2 Transition Pathways Comparative Review demonstrates that there are multiple levers that can be used in different combinations to achieve the objective of decarbonising aviation by 2050,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist. International Air Transport Association (IATA) with its partners released the "Aviation Net Zero CO2 Transition Pathways Comparative Review". This publication compares 14 leading net zero CO2 transition roadmaps for aviation and attempts to better understand the key similarities and differences between the various roadmaps, and their visions for achieving net zero carbon emissions for aviation by 2050. The report compares the selected roadmaps in terms of their scope, key input assumptions, modeled aviation energy demand, respective CO2 emissions, and the emissions reduction potential of each mitigation lever (new aircraft technologies, zero-carbon fuels, SAF, and operational improvements). Highlights: - All roadmaps assume that Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) will be responsible for the greatest amount of CO2 reductions by 2050. The role of SAF varies from 24%-70% (with a median value of 53%). - Technology and operational efficiency improvements are expected to together contribute to about 30% of the emissions reduction in 2050. - The emissions savings by hydrogen and battery-powered aircraft vary greatly. - To achieve net zero CO2 emissions in 2050, the aviation sector will need help from market-based measures and carbon removals to address the residual emissions in 2050. - Even if carbon removal technologies are considered an out-of-sector mitigation measure, it is still both urgent and critical to develop these technologies as CO2 will be needed as feedstock for producing power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels. The International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s Comparative Review of Aviation Net Zero Co2 Transition Pathways shares some interesting findings, including " In terms of absolute emissions reductions by various mitigation options, we found that the mitigation potential of a given option is determined again by the purpose of the roadmaps". It also states that "Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is assumed to deliver the highest emissions savings in the energy transition of the aviation sector to reach net zero by 2050", ranging between 24-70% reduction, highlighting the importance of #SAF in coming years of sustainable aviation. 💡Can we reach our 2050 climate goals? The aviation industry faces significant challenges in achieving climate-friendly or even climate-neutral flying by 2050, according to a report from the Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). The report emphasizes the need for a mix of technologies: 🔌electric propulsion 🛫sustainable fuels 🌿green hydrogen ⛽fuel optimization ✈️aircraft efficiency improvements However, achieving climate-neutral aviation by 2050 seems unlikely without more drastic measures such as taxation or quotas. Despite efforts to develop sustainable aviation fuels and alternative propulsion technologies, significant hurdles remain, including technical complexity, scalability, and infrastructure challenges.
