🌊 One Health submarine good practice : Posidonia in French Mediterranean sea 🌿Forming underwater meadows, Posidonia creates essential living habitats for thousands of marine species and endemic ones. Plants flourishing for 70 to 100 million years enduring various climatic extremes since the time of dinosaurs. However, their future now faces unprecedented jeopardy. 🤲 Cities are working strongly to protect Posidonia and underwater biodiversity with actions of ecological restoration with replanting to accelerate the natural resilience of the Posidonia meadow. ➡️ For more informations, here are some examples of European cities : https://lnkd.in/dbW8af_X #OneHealth #OneHealth4Cities #Biodiversity #PlanetaryHealth #Posidonia Office français de la biodiversité WWF MedPAN European Environment Agency IUCN IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation European Marine Board IVZW LIFE Programme GIS POSIDONIE

The herbivorous sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, once nearly functionally extinct, is making waves in the Caribbean by increasing recruitment potential of the Critically endangered Elkhorn coral. 🫧 The study, led by SECORE International's restoration technology manager Kelly Latijnhouwers, explores how these sea urchins are reshaping reef habitats. 🪸 Their presence boosts coral larvae settlement and survival by reducing harmful turf algae and enhancing the growth of crustose coralline algae, which are critical for coral recruitment. 🌱 The findings suggest that integrating these herbivores into coral restoration efforts could significantly improve outcomes. By creating favorable conditions for coral larvae, these urchins could even double the chances of young corals surviving to maturity! visit our link tree #CoralRestoration #OceanConservation #marinelife #Sustainability #ocean #ClimateChange #marinebiology #coralseeding #secore #climateaction #biodiversity #ecosystem #marineresearch

An oasis in the deep. The seafloor is often soft and covered in layer upon layer of sediment; it is a suitable place for foraging, but there is no shelter or community. However, underwater mountains offer prime real estate for sponges, anemones, and coldwater corals. Not only do seamounts have a rocky substrate for these sessile (immobile) animals to cling to, they also offer a place for gathering nutrients carried by the currents so these slow-growing animals are able to establish lush deep sea gardens that support a host of wildlife. This little mountain "village" was observed during the #NazcaHighSeas expedition. Since January, international teams of scientists on Falkor (too) have been working in the region to catalog biodiversity and oceanographic conditions along several underwater seamount ranges in this essential area of our global Ocean. Their work will provide scientific data to inform potential marine protected areas in the high seas — something experts believe is critical for the health of our planet’s life support system.

BREAKING: 90 Year Study Reveals Rich Shark and Ray Populations in Greek Waters A recent study by environmental organization iSea NGO has revealed fascinating insights into the biodiversity of sharks and rays in Greek waters, highlighting 4,540 recorded instances over the past 90 years. The study identifies 33 shark species, 29 ray species, and one chimaera, emphasizing the critical role of Greece’s marine ecosystems in supporting these populations. Despite frequent sightings, there have been no fatalities related to shark interactions in the past 75 years, reaffirming the low-risk nature of sharing these waters with such incredible marine life. #MarineBiodiversity #Conservation #Sharks #Rays #GreekWaters #iSea Photo: iSea

💖 Dive into the Deep: Meet the Adorable ‘Barbie Sea Pig’! 🌊 This extraordinary creature, scientifically known as an Amperima sea cucumber, was one of the fascinating discoveries made on a recent deep-sea expedition! Nicknamed the "Barbie Sea Pig" for its rosy hue and tiny feet, this deep-sea dweller plays a crucial role in the ocean ecosystem. Here are some fascinating insights about this remarkable species: ● Ocean Floor Vacuum Cleaners: Pink sea pigs act like living vacuum cleaners, traversing the ocean floor in search of nutrient-rich sediments. ● Specialized Feeding: They have unique outgrowths on their underside, modified tube feet, which they use to shovel food into their mouths. ● Deep-Sea Giants: These sea cucumbers were among the largest animals encountered on the expedition, highlighting their importance in the deep-sea food web. The discovery of the pink sea pig underscores the incredible biodiversity found in our oceans, reminding us of the importance of conservation and exploration. Let's protect these amazing creatures and the incredible ecosystems they inhabit! Video credit goes to @dailymailanimals #DeepSea #OceanConservation #Biodiversity

There is magic in the midwater, where blue fades to black and the sun's rays cannot penetrate. It is home to animals that defy imagination and a rich source of nutrients for many creatures. It might be hard to imagine a place with no shelter as home to many — no mountains or valleys, no nooks and crannies — but it is. The mesopelagic region, also known as the Twilight Zone, extends from about 200 to 1000 meters below the surface. Massive daily migrations upward from ocean depths influence carbon cycling and sequestration while supporting remarkable biodiversity. Animals like this Colobonema sericeum, one of the fastest swimming jellies, float and wait. With tentacles spread wide and covered with stinging cells called nematocysts, unwitting prey might find themselves quickly enveloped in the belly of a jelly. According to experts at MBARI, they have been observed flinging their tentacles to confuse predators while they jet out of danger and avoid becoming some larger animal’s lunch. This midwater resident was observed during the #ChileMargin2024 expedition, where scientists are working to characterize how food and energy move through these ecosystems from one organism to another. This 55-day expedition will advance understanding of an essential area in the Ocean while strengthening efforts to manage and protect Chile’s waters. Explore with us: https://lnkd.in/eZ8VyNm6

🛰️ Copernicus Sentinel Image Of the Day 📅 The water quality of Lake Chapala in México, 🇲🇽 threatened by an 🌿 algae bloom 🌎 Lake Chapala, 📍 the largest freshwater lake in Mexico, is located in the state of Jalisco. It is the primary source of water 💧 supply for the Guadalajara metropolitan area and supports a rich biodiversity of aquatic life, including numerous fish 🐠 species and migratory birds. 🐦 Since 2009, the reservoir has been declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. 🌎 However, pollution and habitat degradation pose a significant threat ❗ to the lake's biological integrity. Recently, low water levels 🌅 combined with high temperatures 🔺 in the area have led to an excess of nutrients and a proliferation of 🔬 microscopic algae, which have tinted the water green 🟢 and accumulated on the shores.
