The worlds two largest hydrogen fuelled ships to be built in Norway Torghatten Nord AS finally confirmed that the Norwegian yard Myklebust Verft AS will build the two hydrogen ferries that will cross the Vestfjord between Bodø and Lofoten. Each of the two 117m long ferries will have a capacity of 120 cars and 599 passengers. As the ferries will operate in the outer Vestfjorden in Lofoten, one of the longest and most challenging ferry routes in Norway, they are designed with closed car decks and a special hull design for operate in exposed waters. The vessels incorporate new technology, ensuring safety and comfort for passengers and crew without compromising. The ferries will be the world's largest hydrogen-powered vessels and will feature the largest hydrogen installation ever installed on a ship. Each vessel will have 6400 kW of fuel cells with associated auxiliary systems. The onboard hydrogen is stored in compressed form. The ferries are designed for 100% zero-emission and feature a multi-hybrid propulsion system with hydrogen-electric as the primary mode and diesel-electric as the secondary mode. Today Unitial went to the 'De bouwplaats van Morgen' ('Tomorrow's construction site') at the location of Staad Groep. This was the final presentation of a multi year program in which several pioneers joined forces to work with electrical machines, quantify benefits, and share recommendations for the future. Our three key take aways: - A lot of work can already be done zero emission, yet at slightly higher cost - In order to work with electric machines, charging infra & charging logistics pose a new and complex challenge - Netcongestion limits the timing of charging and will increase in the coming years, requiring active control of charge power during peaks and at night At Unitial we believe that it is key to have insights into energy consumption when setting up a project. This will allow to timely arrange the right infrastructure and logistics. Contact us if you are interested to discuss your project. #OffHighway #Electrification #FleetEnergyServices #EnergyLogistics

New developments in the #sustainable shipping waters. First-ever wind and #hydrogen fuel cell-powered containerships. This innovation comes as a result of a partnership with Fosen Stralsund GmbH shipyard in Germany, to design and construct two vessels launching in 2027. Financing secured: £50M ($54.5M) from Amsterdam-based PROW Capital. Series A investment round ongoing Collaborations: with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. CSC-VEN and FUTURESHIPS ship brokerage. Vessel highlights: • Size & Capacity: 328 feet, 152-160 TEU, 12 reefer containers. • Design: Streamlined hull, carbon fiber masts with pressure-sensing fiber optic cables, 205 feet DynaRig masts. • Performance: 18 knots (wind), 11 knots (hydrogen fuel cells), 10,400 miles range with wind, 1,200 miles with hydrogen. • Zero Emission: Recognized by IMO as "absolute zero emission," Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, class notations for silent operations. Veer.Voyage has bigger plans. The bigger idea imagines this modular design at scale, with a fleet that sets a new standard for decarbonised shipping. In the meantime, in 2024 478 container ships with a capacity of 3.1 million TEU are scheduled for delivery, beating the 2023 record by 41%. The container fleet capacity is therefore expected to grow by 10% in 2024. However, the container trades are expected to grow significantly slower. BIMCO forecasts that the increase in container volumes will increase the demand for ship capacity by 3-4% in 2024. Will future economics support a fleet renewal, at least in line with 2030 targets? #shipsandshipping #decarbonisation
