Food Tank, a nonprofit organization dedicated to driving positive change in the global food system, is hosting a series of events during Climate Week NYC from September 23rd-27th! The events will feature renowned speakers and delicious food from the organization and its partners, including the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and World Food Program USA. The programming will explore crucial topics such as the role of restaurants and farms, the importance of healthy soils, and strategies for reducing food waste. Highlights include the “Restaurants and Farms are the Key Solutions to the Climate Crisis” summit on September 23rd and thematic summits on September 25th and 26th focusing on food system resilience. Food is a Human Right, Not a Weapon: A Call for Global Food Justice 🌍🍽️ As we mark #WorldFoodDay, it’s vital to remember that food is more than a basic necessity—it’s a human right that connects us to the land, our culture, and one another. Yet in many conflict zones like #Gaza, #Yemen, and #Sudan, food is being used as a weapon, depriving people of this essential right. This injustice must end. We need a global food system that works for everyone—one that guarantees access to healthy, sustainable food while also protecting the planet. A research collaboration in 🇯🇲, The Caribbean Food for Climate Justice (CFCJ) Research Group, has brought scholars from The University of Edinburgh, The University of the West Indies, Heriot-Watt University, and Wild Caribbean, alongside youth groups and Taino elders to share ancestral knowledge. This group is working to promote traditional crops and medicine as a solution to the challenges of #climatechange, poor health and food security. Their experiences and wisdom not only help transfer intergenerational knowledge but also preserve our culture in managing nature and food production. Elders play a crucial role in sharing their insights with students, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. Indigenous peoples possess invaluable knowledge about ensuring food security, combating climate change, and caring for our environment. By integrating this wisdom into our current practices, we can create a more resilient and sustainable food system. One of the most significant events happening in New York City today, September 26th, 2024, is the Building Resilient Food Systems for All forum by Food Tank. As I reflect on the discussions taking place, the big question in my mind is how we can ensure these global conversations create meaningful impact, especially in the most remote villages of Africa and other developing economies. While many of us may not physically be in New York City, technology has given us the power to participate and engage from anywhere. To my fellow young people, I urge you to pay close attention to such discussions—they shape the policies and programs that will affect our future. These dialogues often influence global narratives that may not fully resonate with our unique contexts, but that’s precisely why we must be intentional in defining who we are, what solutions are best suited for us and our countries, and how we can collectively move forward. It's encouraging to see this new paper in Nature Food. I like the graphic that validates diverse sources of knowledge, particularly stemming from lived experience... The paper talks about co-creating knowledge and advocates for "Intercultural co-creation: diverse ways of knowing and being are grounded in different geographical, institutional and epistemic cultures. Thus, intercultural co-creation enables different ways of learning, constructing and passing on knowledge (for example, scientific and Indigenous) to coexist and enrich each other."
To overcome the urgent crises of our time, it’s critical that we create solutions that are based on a diversity of knowledge. The Global Alliance’s Lauren Baker and Amanda Jekums have co-written an article for the Nature Food journal on democratizing knowledge approaches to food systems transformation. How? Firstly, let's read what FAO says about this year's theme: "Agrifood systems, as a whole, are vulnerable to disasters and crises, particularly the impacts of climate change but at the same time, they are generating pollution, degrading soil, water and air, and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss. By transforming agrifood systems, there is great potential to mitigate climate change and support peaceful, resilient and inclusive livelihoods for all." Biosensors can be an invaluable aid in the early detection of pollutants and pests, which can have negative impacts on (agro) ecosystems.
