I am very grateful and humbled to have been nominated as Fenland Business Person of the Year.   However, this is something that I find incredibly awkward, I don’t like focussing on myself and the achievements of the collective are down to the whole team and not only me.   The interview with the judges last week was uncomfortable for me, however, it did allow me to reflect on the great progress that we have made over the past 3 years, there is too much to mention, but here are some highlights: - Set short, medium and long term goals with action plans - Evolved our vision and mission building on our core values of customer service and creating the type of environment we want to work in - Untangling of ownership and responsibility roles, clarifying roles and responsibilities - Changed our mindset - Always seeking ways to improve from the smallest to biggest details - Recruited key team members that fit with our culture - Joined forces with Jan JLM Health and Safety Ltd - Expanded our White & Eddy service offering - Improved processes and procedures with the focus on simplicity - Formed WE Consulting Engineers allowing us to offer Structural and Civil Engineering - Launched new and updated websites - Created a team to focus solely on our residential extensions and alterations projects - Arranged business coaching and appointed a non-executive chair Andy Leet - Working with the wonderful Joe Mills, FCIPD Tree Academy to improve our people focus, communication and human connection   This has all been driven with a focus on our clients and our vision of: Simplifying the Process of Creating buildings for our clients and to deliver spaces that improve the lives of people that use them This underpins everything we do!   It’s not been without its challenges, but I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date and there is more to come!!   More to follow on that this afternoon...   Its may be too late, but here is a to a great 2024!!

Taking cues from how WA is able to scale up workers from our north-west resources or infrastructure projects, here is an accelerator idea to deliver longer-term, permanent living options into Western Australia faster, cheaper, and more sustainably. By providing short-term housing solutions (say 10-15 years) as construction and key worker villages across the Perth metropolitan area, this will then increase the supply of long-term, permanent, and affordable housing, as it will allow for more trades to flow into the industry and therefore more permanent homes to be built. The villages could be provided on under-utilised crown land, or on land in areas such as around new Metronet train stations that currently don’t meet private development hurdle targets to develop now - allowing the land to be put to good use straight away, then sold off and developed by industry in the future when returns improve. This idea could work anywhere else across the country, as long migration opportunities for international key construction workers are also supported by the Federal Government. As a consequence, more workers/construction labor force in the WA market means more competitive pricing of projects, faster delivery of housing, and keeping construction costs down. Furthermore, this is a step closer to being able to move from the 16,000 dwellings currently being delivered annually to the required 25,000 to meet our Federal housing targets. Living in these homes is a short-term accommodation option that will accelerate the delivery of suitable permanent housing options for workers and their families to live in, as more homes are delivered into the WA market and our rental vacancy increases. Unfortunately it appears that this complex of structures is another case of massing gone awry - no form based zoning to speak of - no flow of open spaces connected to anything just bounded plaza volumes that don't serve any purpose other than - OK - there is some open space - that's a bonus but what a feng shui nightmare of a layout - no hierarchy - no focal points - no splines but maybe one in the very middle leading to no one knows - varigation of scale feels completely random to adjacent uses / environs - lost opportunity to create a mixed-use corridor with activities and services off the primary arterial ? Really looking forward to this on Friday at the Barbican and hearing from lots of Tibbalds friends and collaborators on this important topic. Having spent much of the last 10+ years working on the design, planning and delivery of public housing for a wide range of boroughs and public landowners it will be really good to see how these speakers will respond to the challenge and set out their manifesto for change! Tickets here: https://lnkd.in/esripGK2 UPDATE: My takeaways from the event......... 1: Invest in public housing directly as will create massive savings in housing benefit (currently £55BN+ annual spend) as well as other benefits around housing security and if done well - quality. At the moment we spend less than 10% of the housing benefit budget on new affordable homes or retrofit. This also means having a minister for public housing. AND making space for community led and smaller scale delivery via CLTs and self build projects. 2: Move housing (and especially social/affordable) from being an asset/commodity to necessary public infrastructure. 3: Technology alone won't/can't save us. We have to look carefully at what is being BIM'd and MMC'd and avoid "hostile" typologies that impact negatively on quality of life. 4: Put in place key protections around design, focussed on where they support quality of life and including enforceable rules around circulation a: the stop and chat rule, b: the place to sit rule, c: the washable robust surfaces rule. The absence of good design in housing focussed on quality of life and liveability is a public health matter. 5: Passivhaus for all homes as this delivers significant benefits around fuel poverty and operational carbon. It isn't hard but we really do need to address the performance and skills gap in construction. 6: A strategic and holistic view of retrofit based on replicable models for housing typologies rolled out by those skilled to do so. Funding the skills needed as well as the implementation. 7: Land value tax/land betterment tax. Lots say its a good idea but so far noone has had the guts. 8: Put children first in the way development is planned, delivered and managed. Always. 9: Acknowledge that sometimes bigger developments are harder to bring forward and that we need to value small as well as big. 10: Get on with making change and don't wait for others to do it. LOTS to think about!
