No doubt, you've been flooded with news about our pioneering 'Letters to Heaven' initiative over the past 18 months (if not, where have you been?), which started at Gedling Crematorium and quickly gained the spotlight within our entire group and, subsequently, globally (just ask Drew Barrymore- https://lnkd.in/enU_BzKS)! One question that frequently arises is, "What happens to the letters once they're removed?" These inquiries sparked thoughtful consideration within our team at Westerleigh Group, leading us to collaborate with the exceptional team at The Faunus Group to discover a sensitive and sustainable method for managing the letters posted in our 'LTH' postboxes. Aligned with our own ESG principles, Faunus' mission to develop environmentally beneficial and socially responsible projects perfectly complemented our vision. The trial aimed to assess whether their composting equipment could effectively decompose a batch of test cards and letters, mirroring the typical mail received through our post boxes. We're thrilled to announce that the trial exceeded expectations! This success prompted us to secure investment to procure the necessary equipment for each of our Westerleigh sites. The composting equipment, including tumblers and composting solutions, gradually breaks down letters into soil over time. This resulting soil is then reintegrated into our grounds, establishing a beautiful and sustainable cycle. We understand that the fate of these letters has been a pressing concern for the communities we serve, and it's a matter our colleagues have approached with great sensitivity. With this innovative solution, the letters remain within the site where they were originally posted, becoming an integral part of our grounds forever. 🌍 Our 2022 Carbon Footprint exercise led to an in-depth assessment and the development of a robust carbon reduction strategy detailed in our 2023 Impact Creation Report. One key initiative is our partnership with Soil Capital | B Corp™ to support farmers in transitioning to more profitable and regenerative agriculture. This collaboration aims to promote healthier ecosystems and ensure more resilient food production from the ground up. Our carbon contribution has financed the adoption of regenerative practices on a total of 209 hectares of crop area across 26 farms in France, Belgium, and the UK. Very exited to share this big news with you. Today we officially launched our Success in Regeneration solution. SiR helps investment funds and their farm managers adopt regenerative management. Most of you probably know that we are in the business of supporting farmers in their transition to regenerative agriculture. This hasn’t changed. But we have learned that if you want to achieve systemic change towards a regenerative agrifood system, you need to enable large scale farms to embark on a truly holistic regeneration journey. But a regeneration partner (capable of doing that) was still missing. Our non-profit and commercial activities have prepared us for this role. "While there are many types of seemingly simple or obvious actions that companies can take for nature (e.g., improving circularity, regenerative agriculture, tree planting), claims of measurable contributions are hindered by uncertainties. These manifest in multiple ways, including measuring negative impacts in complex value chains and measuring positive outcomes associated with mitigation actions. Uncertainties are further exacerbated by leakage – where one organisation’s direct and tangible actions do not lead to overall improvements in the state of nature because of a lack of change at jurisdictional, value-chain, market, or systems scales. These issues create risks of greenwashing; ineffective, insufficient, or inequitable action; and unintended environmental or social consequences. A recent Forbes story by our CEO, Sara Scherr, highlights how new long-term, place-based partnerships between farmers, businesses, environmental organizations, local governments, communities and indigenous peoples are the solution to various global challenges. 🤝 Landscape partnerships are viable investments that can help with biodiversity loss, climate change mitigation, hunger, rural development, water quality, and more. In Germany, for instance, regenerative practices have the potential to boost farmers' profits by over 60% and add more than $9 billion annually from socio-ecological benefits.
