The relationship between trauma and addiction is complex, and without the necessary support, trying to understand the relationship between the two can be overwhelming. If someone has experienced traumatic events, they are significantly more likely to develop an alcohol or substance use disorder. For instance, studies have found that substance use developed following trauma exposure (25% – 76%) or the onset of PTSD ( 4% – 59%) in a high proportion of teens with substance use disorder. This is because individuals may turn to substances or unhealthy behaviors as a coping mechanism to numb emotional pain or escape distressing memories. If you feel that you could be suffering from any of these conditions or even just want to learn more about trauma or addiction, our team of experts is here to provide guidance and support. Know that you don't have to undergo these challenges alone.
