Get onboard with the future of aviation

Kicked off “spooky season” conquering the many fears that come with starting a new job. Although, this isn’t technically a new role for me. I’ve done it before, jet-set 30,000 feet above. Flight attendants do that, but it’s not the glamorous picture you’re probably thinking of. My first trip back in over 3 years was an eye-opening experience. Flight attendants kick butt! I joke and say our title should be changed to inflight responders because this role is more than serving customers a beverage and snack. Flight attendants respond to just about anything that can happen on a flight. Sick passenger? Grab the medical equipment. Oh there’s a fire? Grab the fire equipment. Unruly passenger? Grab the handcuffs 😅. Captain says we need to evacuate? We can do that in 90 seconds. Do these things happen often? Thankfully no, but you’ll be looking at my fellow crew members when the flight deviates from its originally scheduled service. I’m thankful for the training and knowledge I have to be able to handle just about anything in this role. Passengers often lack detailed knowledge about flight safety, focusing more on the excitement of their journey. However, even small things matter greatly in flight safety. From fastening seat belts during turbulence to following crew instructions during emergencies, these seemingly minor actions can be crucial. Paying attention to safety briefings, knowing emergency procedures, and cooperating with cabin crew instructions all contribute to a safer flight. Every little precaution matters, highlighting the importance of passengers' attentiveness and compliance.

"The objective is to reduce the time cabin crew have to spend on the aisles. For SIA, this could translate into retraining cabin crew to increase their efficiency, or changing the way services are delivered without compromising service quality. And the option to restructure the cabin layout remains a possibility." PS: Aircrafts must have sturdy grab bars above headrests for people to hold on to while standing and walking along the aisle. As irregular & random as this screenshot may appear, it requires over 80 people (in a large #airline ) to create and maintain possibly 200 versions of each single line, subject to safety restrictions imposed by civil #aviation regulations & airline policies and procedures. Such rules are developed by subject matter experts, aviation #psychologists, regulatory specialists, and other professionals in aviation safety and human factors. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗯. #𝗔𝗜 🤖, 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? 👀 On the flip side, airline #crew schedules dictate the rhythm of crew professional lives. Each entry on the roster shows another journey involving early mornings, long hours away from home, and missed gatherings with #family & #friends. Crew members depend on these complicated schedules to organize their lives outside of work while ensuring they remain prepared & available to fulfill their duties in the air. The concept of overall work-life balance becomes somewhat blurred with all of the daily adjustments, yet the '𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱' smile persists. 🤗 Crew rosters represent a pulse of life, not just numbers on a dashboard. While we might be tempted to analyze them for #cost, what we save on paper is often offset by a loss of interest from a valuable asset of the airline: #𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 & #𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 ♥️

Yesterday, we were reminded of the fragility of safety in our industry with a tragic accident at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. (Presumably) a ground worker lost his life after being sucked into the engine of an Embraer 190 during pushback. The exact details are still being investigated (and once again, this is NOT a matter of hour or days in most aviation accidents cases), but this heart-breaking event emphasizes, I think, a critical point: Safety must never be taken for granted, even in the heart of Europe, where some of the most respectable airlines, airports, and ground handling operators operate. This accident underscores a vital truth, regardless of the investigation outcome: Safety starts with each of us. It’s a shared responsibility that spans across everyone in the aviation ecosystem: pilots, cabin crew, ground handlers, maintenance staff, air traffic controllers, caterers, and yes, managers, accountants and office staff too! Safety is a mindset which, when adopted by everyone, creates a culture all across the organisation and all across the ecosystem. When we all adopt a safety-first mindset, we create a culture where everyone looks out for each other, and the collective vigilance becomes our strongest safeguard. Despite our best efforts and the rigorous safety protocols in place, we must acknowledge that we can never prevent all incidents and accidents. Aviation remains the safest means of transportation, but these tragic events remind us of our fallibility. We must continuously strive to improve, knowing that the system, as robust as it is, is still prone to failure. Let’s use this sad moment to renew our commitment to safety, with humility and respect for the complexities of our operations. Each individual’s actions matter, and together, we should, and we can foster an environment where safety is paramount. "Safety starts with me. Safety starts with you." as I saw in a lot of safety promotion material. My thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the individual lost in this tragic accident, as well as with the crew members, ground staff and passengers who witnessed the accident (also reminding us about the importance of mental health and peer support...) And as always, let's keep Safety a constructive conversation...
