Presenting work at UEGW (United European Gastroenterology Week), Dr. Wang of Nimble Sciences won best abstract presentation: Non invasive Luminal Sampling and Preservation of Small Intestinal Luminal Content for Microbiome and Metabolome Analysis: The Small Intestine Microbiome (SIMBA) Capsule vs Endoscopy Aspirates. That's a long title, but here's an explanation: The amazing team at Nimble Sciences developed a small pill that samples the gut microbiome from the small intestine. Nimble analyzes both the genetic signatures of the microbes and many metabolites. In this work, they showed that their capsule was equivalent to using an invasive endoscope to sample the small intenstine and that the data was quite different from saliva or fecal data. Genetic with metabolic signatures: I call this megaomics and is next frontier in clinical research because it combines the genetics of the organisms with what is going on in the environment of the intestine. Before Nimble, the genetic and metabolic signatures have only been analyzed at scale from fecal or saliva samples. But now, Nimble has a capsule that get down deep in the gut. The small intestine absorbs many critical nutrients: sugars, fats, amino acids and vitamins. When the small intestine goes wrong, it can have huge effects on your wellbeing. It's also the place where a lot of innovation is taking place to engineer gut microbes to directly deliver new therapeutics or nutraceuticals. These can have wide ranging impact on gut dysbiosis, diabetes, Alzheimers, or Parkison's to name some important examples. It's this category, Nutraceuticals, that I'm excited about. Food as medicine has amazing potential and we could see some of the first consumer based products enter the market in the near future.

Kombucha is not a usual mushroom because it represents the symbiosis between yeast and a variety of bacteria aggregated through a permeable membrane. Among the benefits of Kombucha tea are the potential antioxidant effect against free radicals, and the clinical effects on diabetes for its hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, and immune stimulation. But secondary to the lack of evidence to support these benefits, several publications emerged to mention the side effects of Kombucha consumption. #citation New research sheds light on the impact of aspirin on gut health. 🌟 A study on Cell Host & Microbe from The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University using clinical cohorts and mouse models found that aspirin suppresses the growth of a specific gut microbe, Parabacteroides goldsteinii. Supplementing mice with this microbe or its metabolite, 7-keto-lithocholic acid (7-keto-LCA), reduced aspirin-induced damage to the intestinal barrier. Findings suggest that 7-keto-LCA promotes intestinal epithelium repair by suppressing signaling through the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), highlighting the complex interplay between aspirin, gut microbiota, and gastrointestinal homeostasis. Only four molbdoenzymes have been identified in humans. Most of the known molybdoenzymes are found in bacteria. Dietary molybdenum can be administrated to humans, to treat Wilson disease and tungsten poisoning; and it may be useful in arthritis.
