Years of hard work with Matthew Fleenor and Danielle Findley-Van Nostrand to change the climate for women in physics has been selected as one of the10 articles showcased in a Special Editorial on Women in STEM Education in Frontiers journal Here is an excerpt from publication " Balasubramanian et al.’s case study shows how the retention of women in STEM careers in the US can be met by programmatic innovations. Various innovations were tried out over a period of 8 years, both curricular (colloquium, laboratory) and co-curricular (community building, junior review and conference participation). They concluded that a combination of several innovations resulted in an increased number of successful female major students, increasing degree completion by 200% (over 10 years) and resulting in an average graduation rate far above national standard. Another important outcome was that 80 % of the women physics majors maintained careers within the field greater than 5 years postgraduation." #womeninstem #womenempowerment #physics #stemeducation #stemcareers

Let's also remember: 👏 Rosalind Franklin: Whose work was crucial in understanding the molecular structures of DNA. 🧬 👏 Katherine Johnson: A mathematician whose calculations were critical to the success of NASA's Apollo missions. 🚀 👏 Chien-Shiung Wu: A physicist who conducted the famous 'Wu Experiment', challenging the law of conservation of parity. 🔬 👏 Ada Lovelace: Often regarded as the first computer programmer for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer. 💻 These women, among countless others, have demonstrated that science is not just a man's world. We proudly celebrated #WomenInScience at Geographic Data Science Lab yesterday, although a few days late, celebrating the phenomenal women in our Lab who come from a series of diverse backgrounds in #geography , #economics, #computerscience, #physics, #mathematics, and beyond. I feel very privileged to be part of such a varied research group, collaborating with an amazing team of women and men. That being said, I think celebrating #WomenInScience is a valuable opportunity to engage in discussions about the challenges women (and other minorities) face when navigating academia, with a particular emphasis on quantitative fields. The journey to break through is not straightforward, often with a dwindling number of women ascending the academic ladder. It takes perseverance and a resolve not to succumb to the enduring imbalances. It involves facing the intimidating atmosphere of rooms often dominated by a lack of diverse individuals. A challenge that I certainly faced as a young woman entering a quantitative academic field when I was a PhD student. A challenge many PhD students still face today. The shortage of diversity at higher academic levels can be disheartening. Nevertheless, the push for change, for inclusivity, and for a diverse academic environment propels us forward. It’s crucial to foster an environment that embraces #equality, #diversity and #inclusion (EDI), ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender or background, feels supported and empowered in their academic journey. Despite the challenges, thank you to all the support systems (mentors and beyond), who play a pivotal role in providing guidance, support, and a vision of what is possible. I personally feel very lucky to have received such support from several mentor-figures so far, both men and women. There is also something about the power of collective support in advancing our journeys, which gives me strength. Hoping our picture inspires #inclusion, #girlpower and champions #diversity. You can't be what you can't see, which is why relatable role models play such a key role in boosting representation and diversity in certain sectors and careers. We are part of a consortium, #PlanetPossibility, funded by the Institute of Physics, which aims to encourage more young girls to consider studying physics. To do this, we need to show them where studying physics can take them, and introduce them to women in the industry. 👩🔬 Yesterday was International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 👩🔬 Cormica are proud to celebrate the incredible women who are integral to our team and the wider scientific community. Their contributions, dedication, and innovation continue to inspire us every day. We asked them the following questions below:👇 What advice would you give to young girls who are interested in pursuing a career in science? “Science isn't just test tubes and lab coats. There is much more in a scientific career, which includes animal conservation, animal behaviour, biodiversity, and ecology.” “If science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) is something you enjoy, then hone in on that passion and change the world.” Which women in science do you look up to? “I think the life of Emilie du Chatelet (1706-1749) is pretty epic. She submitted a paper entitled ‘Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu’. In it she suggested that different colors of light carried different heating power and anticipated the existence of what's now known as infrared radiation. She was a mother of 3 and became pregnant again at 42. Due to her age and the times she was living in, her pregnancy was a death sentence. Knowing this, she began working 18 hours a day, to complete the translation of Newtons Principia into French. She included; her own notes, clarifications and examples of experiments that confirmed Newtons theories, she achieved her goal just before she died." What's the most unexpected skill you've gained from working in science? "To expect the unexpected!"   Let's encourage more women and girls to explore their passion for science.
