American Airlines simplifies path from student to #flightdeck. Calling it a one-stop-shop for #aspiringpilots, the airline cuts through the maze of #flightschools, applications and interviews on characterizing the normal route #pilots take to earn a spot with a major carrier. Quality flight schools: American has partnered with a network of five high-quality flight schools to provide #cadets with a strong foundation for their careers. “One-and-done” interviewing: American Airlines Cadet Academy participants go through a single interview process, eliminating the need to interview with multiple airlines throughout their training journey. Guaranteed placement: Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive a placement with one of American's wholly owned #regionalairlines. American recently established contractual flow-through agreements with each carrier, allowing cadets to transfer directly to the mainline operation once seniority accrues. A clear path to American: This removes the uncertainty of the traditional application process that typically follows flight school graduation, allowing aspiring pilots to focus on #training and #skilldevelopment. The #flight schools include Infinity Flight Group, LLC, CAE, Coast Flight Training OBAP - Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Luke Weather Flight Academy and Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology Approximately 800 cadets from all backgrounds and nearly every US state are currently enrolled in the program — fruits of purposeful recruiting and partnering at industry conferences and local high school and community events. https://lnkd.in/e7KEr8aJ

Crunch time in the global skills shortage in the aviation industry is upon us though the experience varies depending on the company, region, country. Contenders for the crown in the best newcomer category in the beauty pageant expected in 2030 would do well to take note of the lessons previous crown holders are happy to share. Sharon DeVivo, President of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in NY suggests employers 'look beyond their traditional methods for reaching the next generation of employees, particularly the colleges and training institutions that they typically use to fill their pipelines for everything from technicians to engineers. I suggest they look to underrepresented populations that have not been exposed to the life-changing trajectory a career in aviation and aerospace offers.' Every country and region will have its own hiring challenges but lack of trained talent and skilled technicians are bound to be at the top of everyone's list of headaches. North America alone is expected to face a shortfall of 12,000-18,000 aviation maintenance technicians. CAE puts the global demand for technicians by 2032 at 402,000. India and the Middle East should take note. Record busting aircraft orders should be reflected in record busting investment in pilot training and aircraft maintenance talent. Helping careers take flight! Earlier this month, we partnered Boeing to organise the Career Exploration Day, a one-day learning journey for students from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) as part of our IHL-to-Work initiative. During the visit, students had the opportunity to experience a flight simulator, learn about the different types of materials used to make an aircraft and gain insights into the types of training that aircraft maintenance technicians undergo. As the first stop and ecosystem builder for disability-inclusive employment, we bridge the gap between students and organisations through learning journeys. Students are exposed to the different types of careers and what they entail to smoothen their transition from school to work while participating employers get the opportunity to engage with students with disabilities and take a step forward in building an inclusive workplace.  Pooja Umashankar, aims to address the global shortage of engineers in the aviation industry, with industry estimates suggesting a need of approximately 700,000 engineers by 2040. Umashankar, an aviation maintenance engineering student at the University of South Wales, aspires to promote safe air travel for the rapidly expanding aviation industry. However, securing an on-the-job training placement has proven to be challenging. The current shortage of female engineers, representing less than 10% in the UK and 2.8% in the US, could potentially be addressed by encouraging more individuals like Umashankar into the trade. Moreover, the push for more apprenticeships and internships could help combat this pressing need for more engineers in the industry. The ongoing retirement of ageing engineers only underscores the urgency of this issue. #aviation #womeninengineering #futureofaviation

Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology seems to be navigating the choice students are making -- college versus #technicalschool -- and later using workplace education benefits to go to college. Domenic Proscia noted students are delaying higher degrees and are joining the #workforce as soon as they get their #certifications in an interview with Aviation Week Network. "At Vaughn, we see this as a good first step for students new to the field. We want our graduates to be successful through programs such as lifetime career counseling and support. We also know that graduates take advantage of tuition reimbursement opportunities that most companies offer, and we encourage them to get into the industry and take advantage of those opportunities. Those who are destined for leadership roles will prioritize education as their careers progress." Interestingly, he discussed #aviation and #aerospace workforce competition noting the skills for aviation match those of #manufacturing and many other industries. "To grow the workforce #pipeline, aviation could consider defining career pathways for new hires, working toward better compensation and benefits packages, and offering more #apprenticeship and #internship opportunities to students. Equally important is the need to partner and support the institutions that provide those certified #technicians with equipment donations, regular campus visits to speak to students about the opportunities, work with the institution’s feeder high schools to promote the field, and offer scholarships for under resourced and underserved individuals who often struggle to afford certification programs." We speak to a number of young aviation experts on a daily basis, and we couldn't agree more that there needs to be more opportunity for younger people, especially with such a shortage of experts. It seems not enough young people are aware of the benefits and the career that can come from working in such an amazing industry, so it's great to see some efforts being made and this topic coming to light. FLIGHT SCHOOL This past week, a classmate of mine asked me about giving a copy of my book to a young woman who won her science fair. Chuck gives out cash awards to students on behalf of the National Society of Professional Engineers and this time, included my book! Many of my blog posts include excerpts from my book, Flight Lessons: Navigating Through Life’s Turbulence and Learning to Fly High. Have you read it? I have been receiving good feedback whenever I write about aviation so let’s talk about flight school. Aviators go through several iterations of ground school and flight training in three phases: basic, intermediate, and advanced, learning more complex topics and skills each time. I attended flight school multiple times throughout my career as certification in each new aircraft typically requires another round of ground school and flight training. In life as in aviation, we need knowledge and training before we take flight. I Learning to me is the ground school of life. We grow our knowledge through school, reading, life experiences, and personal and professional development. The Naval Academy was the ground school of my life. It is where I began to develop the foundation that would support the rest of my personal and professional life. Skills training and practice are as important as expanding our knowledge. Job experiences, working with a mentor, developing a support system—all of these will help maneuver through your career and handle whatever challenges might come your way. During ground school in Pensacola, we learned about the environmental factors that affect weather and to read the clouds. We learned what produces a thunderstorm and, more importantly, how to avoid one. We learned never to fly into or under a thunderstorm, always around or on top. Our instructors frequently reminded us that flying can be unpredictable, and to be prepared always. Life too can be unpredictable. Some days the clouds roll in, the weather gets bumpy, and your sightlines become obscured. You lose track of the horizon and your vision amid challenges. Those are the times to reconnect with your knowledge, training, and support system. If you have built a strong foundation, you will be able to weather life’s storms. The flight school of life is not a “one and done” experience. Career changes, life changes, unexpected obstacles—these are the situations when you might need to go back to the basics for a while, do another round of learning and training. Revisit your dream and continue to build your foundation.
