As we commemorate Black History Month, we want to draw attention to the inequities in affordable housing today. Discriminatory housing policies have long fueled inequities in health, education, wealth, and community access among people of color, enduring into the present day. These policies furthered segregation and hindered wealth creation for marginalized communities. Despite legal strides, the legacy of discrimination persists, with people of color still facing disproportionate hurdles in accessing affordable housing. "Access to a safe, decent, and affordable home can build a stable foundation for families and propel them to improve their health, boost their educational attainment, and increase their economic mobility. Publicly supported housing programs are a vital resource that can help vulnerable families access these benefits." – 2019 Housing Impact Report, PAHRC As we promote Black voices, let us also advocate for solutions to reduce inequities. One type of slavery is gone. Abusive practices just take a different form at @CAQH. CAQH Core, for example, subjugates small medical practices by "creating" Jim Crow rules that make it impossible for small practices to file complaints against BIG + POWERFUL insurance companies that violate Federal law (CAQH CORE standards are adopted as federal regulations under HIPAA Administrative Simplification requirements; CAQH Core is designated as a "Standard Setting Organization"). When Sarah Ahmad + the Board of Directors at CAQH make the rules fair to small practices, she can talk about "freedom" + "equality." Everyone knows that CAQH stands AGAINST Equality. Acts speak louder than words Sarah Ahmad. CAQH Core has failed the American people. It's designation as a "Standard Setting Organization" should be revoked.

The final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families, conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (now known as the Australian Human Rights Commission), was titled “Bringing Them Home” and was released on April 5, 1997. Have we remembered? How many of the recommendations have been implemented? How much have we been able to heal? On Juneteenth, it is worth reflecting. If you think about it, the Founding Fathers were privileged, white men complaining about paying their taxes so much so that they fought a war and established a new country for THEIR freedom while talking like they were championing freedom. They were not. They did not support their wives' freedom, or that of the First People they stole the land from, or that of the enslaved people they stole labor from and called 3/5 a person. These inequities are still far too apparent today, and unfortunately seen in the type of extractive capitalism we call a free market. As well as continued discussion of who can be called a person and how much they count. While we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people, we still need to bend that arc of justice towards freedom for everyone. Please pitch in.

Today, on Juneteenth, we reflect on the importance of freedom and equality. This day marks a pivotal moment in our nation's history, reminding us of the ongoing journey toward justice and inclusion.   Juneteenth is not just a historical event but a call to action to recognize and address the systemic inequalities that still exist. Today marks Emancipation Day, an important occasion to reflect on the abolition of slavery and the ongoing struggle against systemic forms of exploitation. Emancipation Day commemorates the issuance Nation's capital on the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's signing of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which established the “first freed” on April 16, 1862, and celebrating ending slavery in the District. This set the stage for the Emancipation Proclamation President Abraham Lincoln would go on to sign on January 1, 1863, which declared the freedom of enslaved individuals in Confederate territories. However, the proclamation was just the beginning. True freedom did not come until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865, and the legacy of slavery persisted through the Jim Crow era and beyond, in various forms of racial and economic discrimination, continuing into today. Emancipation Day is a day to commemorate the past and progress championed, and it is a call to action. It reminds us that the fight for true freedom and equality is ongoing. As we remember on this day, we are reminded of the importance of education, awareness, and activism in combating modern slavery and trafficking. Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021. The holiday celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, which had been granted by the Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation but which was not enforceable until the end of the Civil War. The holiday is often celebrated with parades, family reunions, speeches, and eating specific red foods. Our offices are closed today in observance of #Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history. Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a profound symbol of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing fight for #equality. We recognize that equity is fundamental to social justice. Disparities disproportionately affect the Black community, resulting in higher rates of chronic diseases, lower life expectancy, and limited access to essential resources. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!
