After just finishing my role as Captain of the Polo Club at Oxford Brookes University, here are some key takeaways. 🏇🎉 As the Club Captain, my key responsibilities included: 🗂️ Organising players for practice sessions and matches. 📅 Coordinating polo lessons and training programs. 🕒 Managing schedules and logistics to ensure smooth operations. 🗣️ Facilitating communication between players, coaches, and club members. 🏆 Overseeing club events and competitions. Throughout this role, I have learned several valuable skills, including: Organisation: Effectively managing multiple schedules, resources, and events. 📋 Time Management: Balancing academic commitments with club responsibilities and ensuring timely execution of activities. ⏰ Leadership: Leading a diverse group of players, fostering teamwork, and promoting a positive club culture. 👥 Communication: Ensuring clear and consistent communication between all stakeholders. 🗨️ Problem-Solving: Addressing challenges and finding innovative solutions to keep the club running smoothly. 🧩 I am immensely grateful for the support and dedication of my fellow club members, coaches, and everyone involved. How good is this! It’s what you should expect in 2024. A playbook to increase your opportunity to experience the vibe anticipated in this environment. Lesson: Set rules early to negate preconceived and old ways of playing and behaving. Challenge: Out with the old and in with the new! There's no doubt if you’re leading a high-performing team, your relationships are bound on agreed strengths, known to increase the vibe that permeates results and outcomes that make an impact. Golf is set in its traditions set in St Andrews, Scotland yet every few years it rewrites or creates new rules (5 rules in 2023) and here in Melbourne’s east, Morak Public Golf Course is serving a multigenerational audience with a new simple set of rules to enjoy golf. Bravo Whitehorse City Council and the team and its members at the Morak Public Golf Club for providing such a contemporary space and vibe. P.S. Great talk, thank so much, Robin Matthews 🙌🤩 Tracing your journey and offering tips/advice that you’ve learned along the way was invaluable knowledge for the cohort. My key take home points from your talk for the students to consider in their early careers were: don’t settle for being average, always strive to do the best job possible; don’t shy away from the crappy roles/tasks; create and utilise contacts at every opportunity; and don’t be afraid to fail - you have to put yourself in a position to learn…and sometimes the best learnings come from errors. Golf lessons are more than just a way to improve swing technique and scoring. They can actually play a role in shaping younger generations by instilling important values and skills that will benefit them both on and off the course. The impact of these lessons is evident in the young golfers who are emerging as leaders and role models in their community. Golf has long been the cliché networking social event for lawyers like me and other professionals outside of the traditional bars, lunches, and coffee. However, I have always noticed that there are several bars to entry: having sufficient skill; having sufficient time; having sufficient funds to purchase golf clubs; knowing the right people; and other more historic bars to entry that prevented everyone (and I mean everyone) from participating (which I would be remiss not to acknowledge). Lately, I have been thinking about changing the above as I progress in my own golf journey. Accordingly, like how other folks have put together social events through the Minnesota State Bar Association, I have been thinking of putting together a “shoddy golfers group” ALL lawyers and other professionals are welcome, where we play entry level courses, only play 9 holes, and everyone of all skill levels are welcome, which hopefully should address some of the above-mentioned barriers.
