Small cruise ships are ripe for going battery and wind powered and dispensing fuel usage altogether. Their slow sailing speeds and shorter voyages through ecologically sensitive areas make them suitable to embark on this change. And Hurtigruten has done just that with their SeaZero project. "The ship concept was developed in the Norwegian city of Ålesund by VARD, one of Hurtigruten’s key partners in the Sea Zero project, and integrates several innovative solutions created in collaboration with partners from the Norwegian maritime industry. Sea Zero is one of several projects from Hurtigruten that focuses on sustainable travel and industry solutions. " Several developments to look out for: 1. Training and upskilling of vessel crew to maintain propulsion batteries, motors and associated equipment. 2. Enhancing of procedures of evacuation in the event of a battery induced fire. 3. Setting up of adequate charging points at ports the vessel is bound to visit. How do you find this concept? Feel free to comment below. #sustainableshipping #decarbonization

The Port of Seattle Commission has approved a 10-year preferential berthing agreement with Carnival Corporation, ensuring that Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Cunard brands will continue to home port in Seattle for the Alaska cruise season. This long-term agreement supports the Port’s commitment to achieving zero-emission sustainability goals while fostering local economic development and enhancing the region’s economic impact from cruise operations. The agreement, spanning from 2024 to 2033, includes a mutually agreeable option to extend for an additional five years, potentially running until 2038. Building on previous collaborations, this new agreement introduces ambitious environmental, sustainability, and social initiatives that benefit the greater Seattle area and accelerate ongoing efforts. #bunkering #bunkermarket #energy #shipping #maritime #shipowners #decarbonization #energytransition #oilandgas #ports #marinefuels #usa #europe #portofseattle #seattleport #carnival #cruiseline #hollandcruises #pricesscruises #shorepower #biofuel #greenshipping https://lnkd.in/dRBmtaEX

CAN CRUISE LINES STAY AFLOAT IN A LOW-CARBON ENVIRONMENT? In parallel to my role in the cruise industry, I have the pleasure to teach at several leading Universities, mostly to students in the hospitality field. This gives me a first-hand opportunity to inspire the next leaders to join our exciting industry! However, students today very often have mis-conceptions about the cruise industry, something the medias are often responsible for. Many students tell me that I work for an industry which pollutes... and they are not Impressed - to say the least - about our industry! I think we - as leaders in the cruise industry - have a responsibility to correct this perception and tell the truth! Yes we pollute. Everyone does. But I'd rather look at the efforts we, as an industry, are doing to correct this. We are at the forefront of any industry in developing sustainable technologies and practices, and I - for one - am very proud of this! The cruise industry alone is responsible for 90% of the environmental innovations in the entire shipping industry, yet we only represent 300 ships out of more the 90,000 commercial/cargo/other ships worldwide! This video of CLIA - although dated 2018 - gives some excellent data about what the cruise industry does to promote sustainability through innovation and practices/training. This data is important to acknowledge and communicate, so we know the truth versus the 'sensational'.... Onwards and upwards. As the summer season rolls out, it's important to keep environmental sustainability top of mind. Our Myth Busting document helps dispels common misinformation surrounding the cruise industry and is available to download on the NZCA website. These straightforward facts will help you and your team speak with confidence about cruise and its environmental efforts. A few key points to note: 1. All members of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) are actively pursuing achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) goals. CLIA represents 95% of all cruise lines globally. 2. The NZCA and CLIA have both submitted their support to the Climate Change Commission, advocating for the inclusion of international shipping and aviation emissions in New Zealand’s 2050 targets. 3. The NZCA recently released New Zealand’s first-ever national cruise strategy, focusing on enhancing the overall value of the cruise industry across the economy, environment, community, and visitor experience. This strategy highlights not only the cruise lines' commitment to net-zero carbon by 2050 but also targets reducing the tourism supply chain’s emissions in New Zealand by 2040. Cruise lines are actively working to reduce emissions both at sea and while in port. With billions of dollars already invested in advanced environmental technologies and cleaner fuels, ongoing investments will continue as new ships are built. Collaboration with cities and ports is also key to ensuring sustainable destination management throughout the cruise season.
