Plans for the west side soccer ⚽ stadium in a nutshell:   --Project is in diligence stage, including focus groups, neighborhood meetings, etc. --Sentiment: generally optimistic.   --Concerns revolve around traffic congestion & potential lack of parking (with the site replacing existing DASH & YMCA lots)   --Facility is conceptualized as mixed-use with year-round function (soccer, festival events, artistic displays, hockey, etc.)   👍 Whether this site is selected or not, I think the initiative is important.   👍 Hometown stadium would be a blast, & a nice step for WMI. ⚽ Plans for a £9.7m sports hub, café, football pitches, and pedestrian access routes for Preston's Ashton Park have been proposed for approval, following a report that was approved by the full December Council. The plans, submitted by Eric Wright Group on behalf of Preston City Council, include six grass pitches and a 3G sports pitch. This is also part of the city's Active Preston project, designed to encourage more city residents to participate in healthy activities and improve wellbeing. The facilities will enable thousands of young people year-round access to both natural and all-weather sports facilities, improving the local provision for playing grassroots sports. We were asked the question yesterday regarding the wider benefits of our proposals for the Home of Football a new purpose built stadium and sports complex for Sheffield FC and Sheffield Eagles. Simply put… The social benefits of the new sports complex include fostering community cohesion through shared experiences at events held in the 5000-seater stadium. The purpose-built sports hall for wheelchair rugby promotes inclusivity, offering adaptive facilities for athletes with disabilities, contributing to a more diverse and accessible sports environment. Moreover, the football and cricket academies will serve as hubs for talent development, providing aspiring athletes with training and educational opportunities. This not only elevates the level of local sports but also contributes to the broader societal emphasis on health and fitness. Economically, the sports complex becomes a catalyst for job creation, from event staffing to coaching positions within the academies. Increased sports tourism, driven by events at the stadium and academy programs, can stimulate local businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and shops. Sport is life, life is sport

Last night was our "Champion's Club" event for Sport Central. I have been on the Board of SC for, I don't know, 8 years or so and sitting my likely last term. The event was a Q & A with Mattias Ekholm and his wife Ida Bjornstad. Dare I say Ida stole the show with passionate commentary about the power of sport in society. Her two asks: 1) we keep sport affordable and 2) we keep sport fun. I think about these two things often. I think about the "spiraling up" of youth sport; the camps, private coaching, etc... and how that impacts the desire to be involved of athletes who that is not in the cards for. I don't have a solution, but I think of "inclusivity" and of all the things that may make people feel excluded - whether it be the matching tracksuits for a few hundred bucks or the feeling you are being left behind because you cannot partake in the "extracurriculars" the rest of the team does. I also think about the bias to "high performance" as the goal of sport; I certainly have that. But much of the value of sport can be found at all levels. Organizations, teams and such need to find pathways to keep kids involved and bonus points if they don't feel like a failure to go on that diverging stream. Finally, to see Mattias and Ida, I am reminded how great having a true partner as, well, a partner is.
