This month we are celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth2023 at Liverpool John Moores University with Liverpool John Moores University Students' Union.
This year’s theme is ‘Saluting our Sisters and Matriarchs in Black History’. It is important to emphasise this theme which underscores the pivotal role that Black women have played throughout history in advancing social justice, culture, and community.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the rich tapestry of Black people’s contributions to the world.
The conversation surrounding race is both complex and crucial. It encompasses discussions on systemic racism, social justice, inequality, and the lived experiences of individuals from diverse racial backgrounds. However, an often overlooked but essential element of this dialogue is the role of history.

As a leadership expert with a specific interest in the implications of race and culture on leadership, Black History and Black History Month are particularly impactful to me. To be truly astute and effective as a leader, one must understand others' backgrounds and history. Understanding the true history and presence of Blacks in America and around the world is critical for any exemplary leader.
Therefore, this month, we pause to highlight the accomplishments and shed light on the struggle of Blacks in America, both past and president.

Black History Month is an annual observance created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson that originated as a week-long celebration, coinciding with the birthdays of Fredrick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Over the years, the observance increased in popularity throughout the US; and in 1969, ‘Black United’ students at Kent State University proposed extending the celebration to a month. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is proud to both honor the Extraordinary Black women from our past who have paved the way for progress, and pay tribute to those Finer women who are shaping our future by making history each and everyday!
Join us as we pay homage to our trailblaZers past, present and future and remind the world that Black History is more than just a month. Black History is the world’s history and it should be celebrated everyday throughout the year!

As #blackhistorymonth comes to a close, it's important to remember that the celebration of Black history and culture should not be confined to just one month. The contributions of Black individuals to society, culture, and history are integral to the fabric of our world every day of the year.
As we move forward, let's continue to educate ourselves, amplify Black voices, and actively work towards a more inclusive and equitable society. Let's celebrate Black history not just in February, but every day, and let's strive to make every month Black History Month.

🖤 The roots of Black History Month go all the way back to 1925, when Negro History Week was first planned and announced. Following the Civil Rights movement of the ‘60s, the week was finally expanded to a month in 1976. As President Gerald Ford noted, we should recognize and “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” We still have a lot of work to realize true equality.
🖤 The National Museum of African American History & Culture's 2024 is African Americans and the Arts, celebrating those who use their creative gifts to drive social change.
🖤 There are a wealth of online resources offering education and resources for recognizing Black History in February and all year long: Search the Library of Congress, National Archives, National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian, and the National Park Service.
🖤 We can all contribute to the continued advancement of black people by seeking to understand our past, and supporting black leaders for our future. Representation matters, and our insistence on it is vital to our collective success.

🌟 Fun Fact Friday: Celebrating Black History Month! 🌟
Did you know that Black History Month has a different theme each year? 🎉✨
Every February, we honor and recognize the incredible contributions, achievements, and impact of Black individuals throughout history. But did you know that the themes of Black History Month vary from year to year?
These annual themes provide a unique focus and highlight different aspects of the Black experience. They allow us to dive deeper into specific areas, celebrating the achievements within those contexts. From art and culture to activism and social justice, each theme sheds light on a different facet of Black history and identity.
So, whether we're exploring African-American literature, paying tribute to Black women who've broken barriers, or examining the connections between Black history and the fight for equality, Black History Month never fails to inspire!
Let's continue to empower ourselves with knowledge, celebrate diversity, and embrace the richness of Black history, not just during February, but all year round. Remember, every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and appreciate the remarkable contributions of Black individuals who have shaped our world!

In the spirit of #BlackHistoryMonth, I was asked a crucial question: How can we ensure inclusivity in our educational environment? How do we recognize the profound contributions of Black individuals in our curriculum?
Let's move beyond the surface, delving into the richness of Ethnic Studies. Rooted in the very land we stand on, it's essential to understand the history and context that has shaped our present.
Black History is not a monolith but a vibrant tapestry of joy, struggle, and triumph. Let's bring criticality and depth to our classrooms, exploring first-hand accounts, acknowledging the pivotal role of Black women, and embracing stories of cross-racial solidarity.
As we navigate these historical swings and shifts, let's commit to a culture of inspiration and liberation. The role of the State Superintendent shouldn't be a hammer of compliance but a beacon of inspiration, inviting all into the transformative work of racial healing and solidarity.
This Black History Month, let's celebrate the entirety of the narrative, fostering understanding, empathy, and a commitment to a more inclusive future.
