As we grow in our careers, we often look back on our first jobs with a sense of nostalgia. For me, my first job at a furniture store in college provided me with invaluable lessons in selling. Working full-time while studying was challenging, but the skills I learned during those years have stayed with me to this day. What was your first job where you developed important skills? Share your experiences in the comments below!

🍎 Craig Williams really has had a colourful career. From fruit-seller, to sportswear store manager, to construction worker. Today, many young people across the country will be collecting their GCSE results. Craig, our branch manager of two years, is proof that you can have a flourishing career, regardless of your exam results. Craig didn’t get the GCSE results he was capable of. At 16, he had no idea what he wanted to do next. He enrolled on a catering course, but cooking for a profession really wasn’t Craig’s thing. He started working at the market, selling fruit and vegetables. But he soon swapped the market stall for JJB Sports. Craig worked his way up to store manager, but it wasn’t meant to be and the store closed down a few years later. However, our Craig did not lose hope! He started working on a construction site, completed his training and became a site manager until that company went into administration. He was back to square one. But Craig didn’t give up. He found himself a job in recruitment, and this is where his 17 year-recruitment career began. Now he’s a branch manager at Impact Resourcing and we couldn’t be prouder. Craig said: "At the age of 16, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve had plenty of roles, and each of them have taught me something different. Life doesn’t end when you get your GCSE results. In fact, it’s only just beginning." 🎉 Best of luck to everyone picking up results today. Thanks for letting us embarrass you Craig. He loves it really... #GCSEResults #NoWrongPath #Careers

I am thrilled to shine the spotlight on another BRUNT Workwear team member for Employee Appreciation Month, the incredible Emily Hopkins, Sales Operations Manager! Emily oversees our warehouse operations, ensures our products are reaching customers on-time, manages our ERP system and much more. She has an incredible attention to detail, which she also uses when reupholstering and giving new life to furniture. What got you into this? My background/degree is in Textiles, Merchandising & Design and I was working in the furniture/interiors industry for a while. Sustainability and craftsmanship were two big appreciations that grew into more of a passion. I took a few classes at the Elliot School to learn basics and then took a leap into a full-time apprenticeship with a local upholsterer. What do you love most about this? The appreciation of the craft, it is not for the faint of heart. It is messy, physical, and mental work that takes years to "master". Seeing something come back to life is very gratifying! Is there anything you’ve learned through this that you bring to your work at BRUNT? End to end process, patience, perseverance. You need to know how to calculate yardage, time, cost, dimensions, and know when something isn’t worth it. You only get one chance to cut that fabric, so you better make sure you have done the backend process right!

Dear network, I am thrilled to share that I recently completed the externship focused in On-Premise Sales & Marketing activities at Red Bull! This experience has been incredibly enriching and has provided me with valuable insights and skills. During this time, I had the opportunity to: Leverage Excel: I utilized Excel to visualize and analyze the performance of our on-premise clients, identifying which clients are excelling and which may need more support. Communicate Insights: I communicated these observations with the Red Bull team, shedding light on the factors contributing to the varying performance levels of different clients. Overcome Objections: By employing active listening and social proof techniques. This hands-on experience has deepened my understanding of sales & MK strategies paired with client relationship management. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity! #RedBull #Externship #OnPremiseSales #Excel #SalesStrategies #ClientRelations #ProfessionalGrowth #ActiveListening #SalesInsights

Outside of working at the family business, my first job was at Tops Supermarket in my hometown of Lancaster, NY. I was 15 when I started and it is a job I have fond memories of…making the 10 minute bike ride to work for what usually was a 4 hour shift as a cashier. "Paper or plastic?" "Any coupons?" "Were you able to find everything you were looking for today?" Between working at the family business, this experience at Tops, and later working at Famous Footwear, I had 3 retail jobs in high school. And for those of you that have worked in retail (yes, pharmacy, but beyond as well) you know well the teacher that it can be. At 15 years old, this experience at Tops as a cashier taught me the basics on what it meant to show up on time, to receive feedback, to communicate effectively, the connection between work and money, and to be accountable to something and someone other than myself. And, as a bonus, from this experience I can impress my boys from time to time with a random produce code I still have memorized 😀 The “you have your whole life to work” saying has good intentions but is missing the mark. Yes, with too much work one can miss out on other formative experiences but let’s not take that too far…the right dose of work is incredibly valuable for a teenager. No class in high school came close to teaching me as much as I learned from those 3 jobs. What was your first job and what did you learn from that experience? Comment below ⬇

Author of “The Layoff Cooties-It’s Them, Not You” (Fall 2024 Release)| I post vulnerably on all things sales and layoffs, saying the things you really feel | 25 Year Sales Veteran | ❤️ Lover of God, Charcuterie & Legos
Everyone is in sales. Yes, you heard me right. I’ll say it again. Everyone is in sales. We are all selling ourselves on a daily basis with whom we interact. The first time I thought about this was when I was 12 years old. Legally I couldn’t work, so I tried my hand at babysitting for local families for some cold hard cash. ❓What was I selling? A fun time for their kids. In college I gave tours to prospective students and their parents. We’d walk around campus for an hour, I’d tell a few funny stories, and answer questions on the fly. ❓What was I selling? A $40k/year tuition at a 4 year institution. A $160k sale was entrusted to a 20 year old. Wow. 😮 A post-college internship found me living in a UK flat with other recent grads. I didn’t know anything about the hospitality industry “working for free” with Marriott at their worldwide sales office in London. ❓What was I selling? My attitude, effort, and skills (some of which I learned at that 4 year, $160k institution). That international work experience landed my first “real job” in sales operations at Marriott HQ when I came home to the US. Don’t underestimate the power of the things you can control. Sales is the best profession in the world. And that’s a good thing since we’re all in sales, remember? 🙌🏻💯❤️
