We kick off 2024 with a new issue of Insider. Now on email to all clients, Issue 5 continues our partnership with the food team at KERB Food led by Charlie Casey. With all the noise around new menu ideas at the start of a year, and the fact that anyone can ‘google’ food trends, we think it’s important that our qual insights are driven by operators who live and breathe innovation. It really brings a unique perspective to Omne clients. A great example is the conversation around ‘small plates’. Some are still touting small plates as being ‘on-trend’ but Insider takes a different view, noting how cost-conscious consumers are starting to push-back; feeling less satisfied and still with a hefty bill at the end of the evening. Insider explores how operators like Leo’s in Clapton and Bistrotheque are focusing on value-generating mains as an alternative and upselling around them. Other breakthrough operators in this issue include POPL, Farmacy and Sunday in Brooklyn and there’s also a review of a resurgent Notting Hill. Without warning, Specialty Food Association has increased its attendee prices for business services a whopping +630%. Attending the past two Fancy Food Shows in NYC and LV has been worth it at that lower, more reasonable cost ($149 for a non-member), as most vendors are looking to connect with buyers, not business services. I've used my time on the floor to take in trends and get to know people within the industry. Now, that same admission is $1095! Why the increase? What are we getting for this additional cost? Unless there are new services directly linked to supporting business services with vendors, I don't see how attending another Fancy Food Show will be worth it in the foreseeable future. Looks to me like they saw what Expo West was charging (which, mind you, is at least 3x the size of this show!) and saw a cash grab.

🗣️Drum roll please!🥁 Introducing a new series I want to explore… “Brutally Honest Reviews” Like many in CPG, I’ve become a nerd with trying new, upincoming products. It’s important to do your homework on every brand… so this series is quite literally me filming my intial review… hence the name “Brutally Honest Reviews”😎 The brand featured here is Cape Tide Hard Tea. For the first review of the series, I wanted to highlight another local, small business. They’re a Cape Cod based brand started by 4 lifelong friends seeking to craft the perfect summertime beverage. Upon my first sip, I could tell this was something I would enjoy. It’s a light, natural tasting beverage that doesn’t have the syrupiness that a lot of other hard teas have.
