Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 AS is planning to launch four completely autonomous ferries by 2028. The autonomous systems will be installed on new-build Lavik-Oppedal ferries in stages once they have been launched in September 2026. The 5.6km route crosses the Sognefjord on the northwest coast of Norway and takes about 20 minutes. “Complete implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including autocrossing and autodocking, will happen in 2027, while autonomous navigation will be implemented in 2028,” says HAV Group ASA, which is designing the navigation system. “HAV Group’s autonomous navigation system will be at the forefront of technological innovation, with advanced functions such as automatic steering of the vessel at all speeds and directions, automatic fjord crossing and automatic docking to the quay without the need for human intervention.” “This is a contract that we have been working towards for more than a year in close collaboration with Fjord1, regulatory bodies and class society,” said Siv Remøy-Vangen, managing director of HAV Group’s business area for energy design and smart control systems. “This contract is not only important milestone for Fjord1 and HAV Group, but for the global maritime industry. It involves technology that will support seafarers and ensure that ferries operate efficiently and safely. Unrelated directly to the picture in this post but, we have finally restructured our entire aerial vehicle and #eVTOL #Compliance and #Certification database after a long drawn out effort. With our basic #AI-Agents, we’ve been blending, and in some cases integrating rules and requirements from Part 23, 27, 107, Section 333 while updating cert bases with the last #FAA’s ConOps V2.0. All albeit unintentional moving of the goal post versus the 200+ companies currently known actively developing eVTOL technologies globally, it is inevitable that this industry will see the light of day. And I’ll say it “whether hook or possibly by crook”. Ok, now to the picture in the post… this was supposedly the battle of the Black Cabs and Uber back in 2014. Not sure how the bus lanes got involved in this… What would be the “Greyball” and “God View” for UAMs? Anyone who remembers Uber in its Kalanik days and its “grey ball” and “Godview” software would argue the notion that helicopters belong to helipads as airport taxis belong to airports. Uber had a killer move that helped Uber drivers evade issues with regulators. The short stint gave them an upper hand over taxi cabs and the kill-joy officials at the time but this was all short lived. It sounds somewhat ridiculous to say greyball may find its way to the skies but, if I’m thinking it, someone is likely building it. The Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 signed a shipbuilding contract with Turkish-based Tersan Shipyard for four battery-powered autonomous double-ended ferries, said to be the world’s first. Zero-emission ferries will operate between Lavik and Oppedal in Norway from September 1, 2026.   According to Fjord1, the ferries will incorporate autonomous navigation and a high degree of automation of vessel functions, thus replacing manual operations.   Implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including autocrossing and autodocking, will take place in 2027, while autonomous navigation will be implemented in 2028.   Companys stating that the new ferries will “revolutionize coastal transport, combining efficiency, safety, and innovation”.   Fjord1 is also expecting to take delivery of three new electric ferries in the second and third quarter of 2024, and the vessels will enter into operation on a 15-year contract with Vestland County Council in January 2025.
