HYBRID ENERGY STORAGE PLANNED FOR SARDINIAN COAL MINE Swiss-based energy storage company, Energy Vault, and CARBOSULCIS S.p.A., an Italian coal mining firm, have announced plans to develop a 100 MW hybrid gravity energy storage system within a soon-to-be-retired underground coal mine in Sardinia. The project will utilize 500-metre-deep mine shafts at the Nuraxi Figus site, combining Energy Vault's EV0 gravity technology with battery storage. The system will feature 20 MW of gravity-based energy storage and 80 MW of battery storage, with an estimated duration of around four hours. This solution aims to repurpose the mine as it reaches its end of life in 2026, supporting Sardinia's vision to convert the site into a carbon-free technology hub. Energy Vault's EV0 technology employs a water-based, modular pumped hydro application designed specifically for underground mines, demonstrating the versatility of gravity storage solutions and their potential to contribute to grid stability and renewable energy integration. More Wind Power Arrives for the Northern Goldfields  This week, we celebrate a significant milestone alongside our partner, Goldwind Australia. We have successfully and safely delivered all wind turbine components for Northern Star Resources Limited’ Jundee gold mine. The components embarked on an approximately 850km journey from Geraldton Port to the site, marking the longest delivery route for wind turbines in Australia to date. In this video that my colleague Reilly Fagan created for the PV Reliability Workshop hosted by National Renewable Energy Laboratory, she discusses some trends we are seeing in the loss history - in solar, we are seeing Severe Convective Storm be the cause of 18% of claims activity, but drive 75% of loss activity. After close to a decade of planning, Controlled Thermal Resources Holdings, Inc. is expected to break ground on its multi-million lithium extraction and geothermal plants here today.
