Aluminium Federation (ALFED) to launch UK Aluminium Manifesto on the 6th June As the leading voice of the UK Aluminium Industry, ALFED is calling upon the next UK Government to recognise and champion the vital role of aluminium in shaping the nation’s future. The UK Aluminium Manifesto underscores the significance of aluminium as an affordable, highly recyclable material that supports a global circular economy and forms an essential component of the modern UK economy. The Manifesto, to be unveiled at the EnvironmentAl Sustainability Strategy Day at BMA House, London on Thursday 6th June 2024, outlines clear stipulations for the new Government to regard aluminium manufacturing as a key contributor to the UK economy. It focuses on doubling down on policies for net zero, safeguarding energy security, and developing a clear industrial strategy to support sustainable aluminium production. 🌍 Today, the European Commission unveiled the Competitiveness Compass, marking the first major initiative of the next legislative term and translating the Mario Draghi Report on Competitiveness into action. This ambitious plan is built around three core priorities - closing the innovation gap, decarbonising while remaining competitive, reducing dependencies and increasing security - and sets the stage for Europe’s industrial future over the next five years. As a critical and strategic raw material, aluminium is indispensable to the EU’s green and industrial transitions. But achieving a competitive and sustainable aluminium industry requires bold, targeted policies that support decarbonisation while strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy. 🔑 To achieve this, we need a clear and actionable plan for aluminium, built on six essential steps: ⚡ Tackle energy costs 🌱 Support decarbonisation efforts 🏭 Strengthen carbon leakage protections ♻️ Secure raw materials and boost circularity 🛡️ Stand firm on trade 📜 Cut red tape to ease the administrative burden on industries The Competitiveness Compass is a crucial first step to establish competitiveness as one of the EU's overarching priorities—but now, decisive action is needed. The future of Europe’s aluminium sector—and Europe itself—depends on it. 🔗 Explore our Aluminium Action Plan: https://lnkd.in/dvNJRt6E 🔗 Read the Competitiveness Compass here: https://lnkd.in/dWBRXH7h #Aluminium4Europe #CompetitiveCompass #CleanIndustrialDeal

Today, we brought together our Advisory & Strategic Committee to discuss key priorities for the aluminium industry. ⚙️ Hearing directly from our members provided invaluable insights into the challenges our sector is currently facing— very high energy costs, unfair trade practices, and the urgent need to accelerate decarbonisation. To tackle these challenges, a bold Clean Industrial Deal and a dedicated EU Aluminium Action Plan is needed. The next five years will be pivotal for safeguarding European competitiveness and ensuring the resilience of our industry. Our discussions focused on EU-US trade relations and working with policymakers to secure affordable, low-carbon energy 🔋 while reinforcing protections against carbon leakage and unfair trade practices 🛡️. We also explored sustainability reporting, the upcoming Circular Economy Act and the need for a truly Circular Single Market. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy required for primary production, making it an energy "bank" that must remain within Europe. Preventing aluminium scrap exports is vital to boosting circularity and supporting the EU’s climate and resource efficiency goals. Finally, we welcomed Eurometaux (European Metals Association) ’s new Director General, James Watson, to align on shared priorities as we enter a new legislative cycle. 👉 Read more about our priorities: https://lnkd.in/dXUMTA4r #Aluminium4Europe #AluminiumIndustry #Competitiveness #StrategicAutonomy

Our Director General, Paul Voss, and our Director of Sustainability, Sandro Starita, together with delegates from the aluminium associations of U.S., Canada, and Japan, met with representatives from the OECD - OCDE and the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris! 🗣️ While gathering useful insights on the ongoing work in both organisations on industrial value chains and their competitiveness, this visit gave us the opportunity to present and discuss: 🔹 the strategic role of #aluminium in our economies and societies 🔹 the characteristics of the aluminium value chain and the identified pathways to decarbonise operations 🔹 the challenges to our sector’s competitiveness caused by unfair trade practices, particularly the distorting effects of certain types of state subsidies ✅The outcome of this debate will support the OECD and the IEA in issuing recommendations to national governments on how to develop consistent and effective trade and energy policies. We look forward to further cooperation with both organisations! 📄To explore the pathways to decarbonise further, dive into our study ‘Net-Zero by 2050: Science-based Decarbonisation Pathways for the European Aluminium Industry’ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d4fMPsqS #competitiveness #tradepolicy #sustainability

What are some fixes to industrial carbon markets? CME signed an open letter from Canadian industry published today by Clean Prosperity: https://lnkd.in/gpHZcWhc. A green economy transition is underway, including a shift towards electrification and alternative energy sources. But the cost of transitioning to the green economy for the Canadian manufacturing sector is estimated to be $180 billion in investment costs and $60 billion in operating costs by 2050. Carbon pricing on industry will significantly impact Ontario manufacturers of all sizes, notably small and medium-sized companies, relying on natural gas as a critical input to their operations. This could imperil their ability to stay in business and potentially cause them to move to more competitive jurisdictions. After years of CME advocacy, the province announced the new Emissions Performance Standards Program (EPP) this summer. This will allow full recycling of Emissions Performance Standards (EPS) proceeds to individual firms who make compliance payments. This will help them invest in high-impact emissions reductions with sufficient certainty and flexibility on delivery timelines. This is consistent with recommendations from Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing Council: https://bit.ly/4dIuTSw. CME calls on the federal government, Minister Steven Guilbeault and all federal parties to replicate this program design for the federal Output Based Performance Standards, or any future industrial carbon pricing scheme. #Vision2035 #ManufacturingMonth #ManufacturingReport #GreenEconomy
