🛫 Engineers from The University of Sheffield AMRC are part of a new £17.5 million project that will develop next generation fuel cell technology, aimed to provide a feasible solution for zero carbon emissions flight. Working in collaboration with ZeroAvia, the Advanced Fuel Cells for Aviation Decarbonisation (AFCAD) project, which was announced at Farnborough International Airshow yesterday (Monday), will develop and define high temperature fuel cell systems to enable zero carbon emissions flight for regional aircraft. 🤝 The consortium, made up of the AMRC, project lead ZeroAvia, the University of Kent and Coventry University, will work together to advance this crucial technology towards commercialisation. The research will centre on developing components and the full high temperature proton exchange membrane (HTPEM) fuel cell stacks and demonstrating previously unmatched levels of specific power and durability. 🗣️ James Hunt, future propulsion lead at the AMRC, said: “The decarbonisation of aviation is an extremely difficult challenge that industry is facing. ZeroAvia is a pioneer in the development of hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, so we were delighted when it asked the AMRC to join the AFCAD consortium." 🗣️ Lee Wheeler, future mobility lead, who will be overseeing the AFCAD activity at AMRC Cymru, added: “In designing an optimised production process and pilot line, we will de-risk the industrialisation of the ZeroAvia system to ensure that the HTPEM stack module can be assembled with zero defects at the rate and scale required by the aerospace sector - helping to anchor manufacturing in the UK and deliver zero emission flight.” 👉 Read the full story here: bit.ly/3WauzoO

One project is focused on developing inverters with continuous load capability, which should significantly increase the performance and efficiency of electric drives. 🌱 The goal? More efficient powertrains, less power loss and more sustainable electric vehicles. 🛠️Overheating of components often limits the performance of electric vehicles. The solution is an optimized inverter with improved cooling management that operates at lower temperatures, reduces losses, and enables longer full-load use. Technology around the electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to grow: Researchers at Aston University are set to investigate the potential of gel electrolyte materials to enhance the safety and reduce the environmental impact of lithium-ion batteries for EVs. The project, led by Dr. Matthew Derry, a chemistry lecturer at Aston University, aims to create sustainable ionogels that can conduct electrically charged ions, offering an alternative to more hazardous substances. Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is currently conducting trials of hydrogen-fuelled charging stations for its EVs across various military sites. The charging stations will support the charging of non-tactical vehicles, part of the MoD’s aim to transition its entire vehicle fleet to 'zero emission' by 2027.
