The Environment Agency has unveiled a new #map based #digital tool to support the shoreline management of England’s coasts - the Shoreline Management Plan Explorer will enable local planners and coastal practitioners to find the information they need more easily, and to help the agency monitor the risks of flooding and erosion. It is also available to the public to promote understanding of the risks of coastal flooding and erosion, along with the management approaches and actions being taken. https://lnkd.in/eAraaSy2

This new high-resolution data from NOAA is useful across the board, but it is especially valuable for small- and mid-sized local governments that might not have the resources to independently secure such detailed data for planning purposes. Free and public availability of such data really lowers the bar for entry into the world of careful planning and analysis needed to adapt to changing coasts and climates. This is a great example of government empowering communities through provision of a public good. Kudos to NOAA for making this happen.

Rerouting Enbridge Line 5 around the edge of the Bad River Reservation is not a solution. The proposed route still will be within the Bad River watershed, which means that any rupture would contaminate tribal lands. https://lnkd.in/g85yeCCH

A farmhouse in Trimingham, North Norfolk, hanging on the edge of a cliff due to coastal erosion is scheduled for demolition. The property has seen significant danger since late March of massive cliff collapse. This is no anomaly as North Norfolk is home to some of Europe's fastest eroding coastlines, with projections from the district council estimating the loss of over 1,000 homes to erosion in the next century. Erosion control measures including expansion of the Environment Agency-funded coastal protection schemes and the Coastwise Scheme aim to help affected communities transition inland. There are ongoing efforts to understand coastal erosion better and develop responses through research collaborations between the British Geological Survey, University of East Anglia, and Norfolk District Council. Despite these initiatives, there currently isn't a government compensation scheme for homeowners like that of the farmhouse.
