It's filled with valuable insights for the electric vehicle sector, including the commercial segment, which we find particularly compelling. 🚍 Buses on a good trajectory! With a current fleet of 3.4 million units worldwide, municipal buses account for 1% of global CO2 emissions from road transport. Good news: they're well on track to achieve net-zero by 2050. BloombergNEF predicts that by then, 86% of buses will be zero-emission. We'll need a little extra support to reach climate neutrality. 🚛 Heavy-duty vehicles need a boost! In the medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicle segment, which totals 83 million units and contributes 30% of CO2 emissions in road transport, the transition is tougher. Projections suggest only 28% of these vehicles will be zero-emission by 2050. Serious and swift support for decarbonization is crucial here. 🔋 Battery supply chain investments may suffice: Significant investments are required across all sectors of the battery supply chain. Companies have already planned $155 billion, which could be enough if executed. Thinking point of today: If a company is procuring a fleet of cars for their business, and wrote out requirements that the suppliers should supply front wheel driven cars (because the customer company's engineers are more familiar with these from the decades they've used these). However, a smart e-vehicle supplier can supplier vehicles with far greater safety, fuel efficiency, and smart driving capabilities. But these greater capabilities are achieved by 4-wheel driven by their individual motors, therefore they're not "front wheel driven". Should the customer company say, whoever ticks these requirements win the deal, and purchase new assets of yesterday's technology and stuck with them for another 1-2 decades? Or can it be more beneficial to take on newer technology with different underlying design and capable of achieving so much more? According to government data from June this year, there are approximately 2.3 million electric vehicles in Britain, equalling to around 7% of overall road vehicles. Typically the majority of these are hybrid models, however all electric cars are catching up and continue to be registered at a quicker rate than diesel or petrol vehicles.
