The LEAD Programme is designed to equip the next generation of African leaders in the extractives sector with the skills required. It brings together a cohort of early career professionals who are working in or engaging with the extractives sector; equipping them with the leadership skills that will allow them to catalyse sustainable development across Africa. The LEAD Alumni Programme focuses on building on leadership competencies and practical implementation of skills obtained from LEAD course by providing a platform and framework for networking and collaboration and continuing the personal and leadership journey beyond the LEAD course. The LEAD Alumni Network incorporates the alumni from the LEAD predecessor programme, Emerging Leaders in African Mining (ELAM) and boasts some 153 leaders, and represents 28 African countries. Alumni are impactful leaders in civil society, government and industry. In 2024, the ‘30 Future Leaders’ initiative was launched in conjunction with African Mining Indaba, in which 15 Alumni and the 2024 LEAD cohort were selected to attend Mining Indaba and participate in key discussions ranging from critical minerals, artisanal and small scale mining and youth leadership. The Future Leaders initiative showcases a small crosssection of the dynamic, impactful LEAD Alumni who are making waves in the industry. Exciting Updates from Outliers Mining Solutions! (OMS Ed) 2024 has certainly been an exciting year for us! We’ve had the privilege of working with several incredible clients and participants across our leadership and technical coaching programs. Here’s what we’ve been up to so far in 2024: -Delivered 3 comprehensive leadership and technical programs for Tacora, Stelco, and GAC Guinea, reaching over 150 participants. Most of these included field time coaching and mentoring, helping leaders and technical teams apply their learning on-site. -Conducted 2 Train-the-Trainer programs: 1️⃣ One designed to hand over leadership facilitation to our clients, ensuring they can continue the journey internally. 2️⃣ The other focused on developing and working closely with a team of plant and mine trainers. -Embedded mining experts in operations, mentoring and advising teams on daily, weekly, and monthly mine operations for improved performance and efficiency. -Delivered a LEAD session to Queens University’s mining engineering students, with another planned before year-end. We’re thrilled to announce an open LEAD session in Sudbury on November 13-14, offering prospective clients a chance to trial the program before fully committing. The 20-minute phenomenon As a leadership consultant, I am privileged to speak and work with many people in multiple sectors locally, nationally, and internationally. One of the common concerns shared by clients is time management. I often hear, “I have too much to do and very little time in which to do it”. In my experience, the anxiety created around an overwhelming workload and fear of workplace reputational consequences is very high. So, when working with clients I use a strategy called ‘The 20-minute phenomenon’. I use this with my clients to help them break down their everyday tasks and or projects into sizeable chunks. This enables them to feel that they are experiencing wins whilst fulfilling steps to completing a task and or project. The goal of the 20-minute phenomenon is to reduce anxiety levels so that people can get on with what they need to do. I was selected for a leadership-development program by a mining company I worked with in the past. We were divided into seven groups. My group had two managers and I, a Superintendent then. Each group was given a project and a mentor. Our mentor was the Chief Operating Officer of the company. The year-long program was over, and each group was to present their work to the executive committee. When our presentation was ready one of our team members proposed how we should run it: One of the managers starts, I had two or so slides in the middle, then the other manager finishes it off. We all agreed. A day before the big day, we met as a team to do a dry run of our presentation. First person went, then my turn. Less than two minutes into mine, a member of the team said: “Steve, it’s either we underrated you or we did not know you well”. Our planned order changed there and then. I was given more slides, and I was asked to do the conclusion part to finish off the presentation. The big day came. Every important person was in the room; GM, COO, Group Execs, CEO and a Board member. We delivered. We didn’t only receive an applause, and we were also adjudged the best group. The following year, a photo of me receiving an award from the CEO featured in the company’s annual report. When you feel underrated and underutilized, being bitter and sour is not the way to change things. Use every opportunity to do excellent work and one day, as it happened to David in the days of old; Your work will give you unimaginable visibility and the King will ask “Whose son are you?” Have a great week. I've known Allan Trench since my MBA days. As a Professor and MBA Director at UWA Business School, Allan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in leadership.
