In 2022, 27 homicides were recorded in Mercer County, NJ. In the same year, the county witnessed a staggering 126 deaths due to opioid-related overdose. While both of these figures are cause for concern, only one (the former) tends to receive widespread media and public attention. Addiction is a disease-- not a choice, not a crime, not a moral failure. Every life that is lost to overdose is a reminder that this crisis cannot change until we end the stigma of addiction and substance use disorder, and break down the barriers that prevent people from receiving the proper treatment, assistance and care that they need to be well. Mercer Council is committed to standing with those in recovery, supporting families that have lost loved ones, fighting the stigma of addiction and challenging systems and perceptions that hold back progress.
